Mexican superclasico outdraws MLS again
October 4, 2006
The Chivas Guadalajara-Club America Mexican League soccer regular season superclasico match, which aired in the U.S. on Telefutura on Saturday September 30 at 8pm Eastern/5pm Pacific, drew more viewers in the U.S. than any Major League Soccer (MLS) telecast in the past 11 years, according to data collected by Nielsen Media Research's National Television Index (NTI) service.
According to the NTI, the Chivas Guadalajara-Club America match drew 1.974 million viewers age 2 and over, making it the second-highest rated club soccer match (a match that does NOT involve national teams) telecast in the U.S. in the past 11 years based on the number of viewers age 2 and over.
The highest-rated MLS match in its history, the debut of teenage sensation Freddy Adu on April 3, 2004, drew 1.969 million viewers age 2 and over.
The highest-rated club soccer match in the U.S. in the past 11 years, based on the number of viewers age 2 and over as determined by the NTI, remains the previous Chivas Guadalajara-Club America Mexican League match, which aired on Univision on February 26, 2006 at 6pm Eastern/3pm Pacific. That match drew 2.588 million viewers age 2 and over.
The NTI started tracking Mexican League soccer telecasts on the Spanish-language U.S. broadcast networks in December 2005.
Univision Communications' flagship Spanish-language U.S. broadcast TV network Univision now reaches nearly 90 million households, while its second broadcast network TeleFutura now reaches over 70 million households.
