The link is in spanish but if you dont understand its says that since the south african government is having great difficulties in meeting the stadium deadlines then fifa might move the world cup to a country in which they could promote the game . canada , australia or the us.

If Canada were to make a submission for WC 2010 we would be hard pressed to come up with adequate stadiums to host the games. Here is a list of potential stadia:

1) Montreal - Olympic Stadium
2) Toronto - Skydome
3) Toronto - BMO
4) Hamilton - Ivor Wynne
5) Ottawa - Frank Clair
6) Winnipeg - Canad Inns Stadium
7) Regina - Mosaic Stadium
8) Calgary - McMahon Stadium
9) Edmonton - Commonwealth Stadium
10) Vancouver - BC Place.

In Germany they had 12 stadiums. This is not to say that the tournament could not be hosted with less stadiums. In fact, given the immense size of Canada I would expect the tournament would have to be divided into east and west.

Needless to say that billions would need to go into stadium upgrades.

Nonetheless, the prospect of World Cup matches taking place in Canada and Winnipeg specifically is too exciting to imagine.

There's no way we could host a WC on our own in 4 years. However, a joint Canada-US bid where only 5 stadiums are needed here might work. Edmonton (Commonwealth 55K), Toronto (BMO Field 25K or Rogers Centre 50K), Montreal (the O 60K) and Vancouver (BC Place 40-50K?) and perhaps Calgary, Regina, Ottawa? We'd have to install grass fields (except Edmonton) on all of these CFL stadiums and likely do some renovations to meet the FIFA requirements...

BTW, there have been numerous articles written on this and they're all rumour. My guess is the WC will be held in South Africa.

I think the plate is full for the CSA as the CEO indicated yesterday that the hosting of the U20 World Cup (2007) and bidding for the Women's World Cup (2011) are the main items on the agenda right now. I can't see them also putting a bid in for 2010.

Canada will host the WC in my lifetime.

IMOSHO.

That said, I think it's a 99% likelihood that 2010 will be in S. Africa. If the 1% happened I could see it being moved to the U.S., with Canada getting a group in T.O. (FIFA would like the "grow the game" aspect of having a single group in Canada, but would not be ready to put the whole tournament, or even half the tournament, here).

But the thing's being held in S. Africa.

2011 WWC , on the other hand, is a strong possibility in Canada. A very strong possibility.

I'd like to respectfully disagree.

There's no way on Earth South Africa can hold these games. They don't have the stadiums, they don't have the infrastructure and they don't have the money to come up with them

You are dead wrong.

Saying South Africa does not have the stadia is the height of ignorance (in the true sense of the word). The infrastructure is being built, and the money? That's laughable.

Don't base your prejudices on the fact that the word 'Africa' is in the country's name.

It will be held in Australia if it is not held in South Africa. It definitely wont be held in Canada, and I doubt it will be held in the U.S either. The U.S does have the interest level in Soccer to make it a great event, the World Cup would be overshadowed in the country it is being held at by atleast 12 other sports going on at the same time-Nascar, MLB baseball season, NFL preview shows, Wimbledon, golf, Poker, Track and field, among others.

Is that why World Cup 1994 was the most successful in history?

I really want to see Africa host the games, but if they can't pull it off. If Australia and Canada are next in line, than I dont' really care about Africa, because I love both these countries. Especially if Canada hosts the games. :D

I don't think it's fair for USA to host these games soley, but a joint North America venture, that would be cool.

If it does get moved, I'd think Australia would be the perfect replacement.

This page has all the attendence info for all the World Cups..
Scroll down near the bottom..
You will notice in '94 that while there were less matches than are played now, the World Cup in the USA had, by far, the largest total attendence and the largest average attendence ever.. And it has not been broken even in Germany where more matches were played.. If they had larger stadiums, Germany likely could have topped the USA this time with their 12 extra matches, but they don't and they didn't, and regardless, saying there's not enough interest here is just crazy..

http://www.planetworldcup.com/STATS/stat_misc.html

I don't think FIFA has any worry about interest for any FIFA events in the USA as every time, including for the Women's World Cups, the sceptics have been proven wrong..

A little note: USA 94's lowest attended match had a figure of 44K which is the highest number for a lowest attended match at any WC ever.. France, Italy, Korea/Japan and the rest all had low matches with numbers like 26K...
Only Germany came close with a 37K lowest match..

So perhaps you should have said "The World Cup should always be held in the USA as there just doesn't seem to be as much interest in other places." ;) (sarcasm)

There is a 0% chance of Canada hosting the World Cup in 2010. First of all, South Africa will host it, and if they cant then Australia will as Australia already has 10 sufficiently suitable stadia with enough capacity. The Host country must have stadia of over 40,000 capacity and at least 7 cities capable of hosting games (only one city can use two stadia. Further yet, FIFA would never give the WC to such an uncompetitive football nation. Canada hasnt qualified for the cup since 1986 and was embarassed by the likes of Guatemala and Honduras last time around, when the Canada squad was supposedly one of the better in ages with Frank Yallop. The World Cup if it cant be staged in South Africa will go to a nation that already has the infrastructure. The possibilities would be Australia (favorites), China (has the infrastructure galore and would poor lots of money in it + have experience from the 2008 olympics), England (though doubtful the cup would be in Europe again so fast), the US, or Mexico. Canada's only hope would be to host games in a joint hosting with the US as only Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver are significant enough to warrant World Cup matches. As much as i'd love to see canada host the world cup, the first chance we have is 2018 and even then we'd be behind England, Australia, China and the US. So if we had a decent team that made the WC in 2010 and 2014, get some more MLS teams in Canada (at least Vancouver, Montreal), improve our stadium capacities, win something (ie Gold Cup), have a strong bid backed heavily we might have a chance for 2018, 2022 or 2026.

I'm sick and tired of people pledging love and allegeance to Canada to only use it as a preface to pointing out all the negatives about their beloved country.

As much as i'd love to see canada host the world cup, the first chance we have is 2018.

Also, not too long ago Australia was as inadequate as Canada and now I'm to believe they are already so far ahead of Canada with regard to the prospect of hosting the WC. Give me a break.

The Host country must have stadia of over 40,000 capacity and at least 7 cities capable of hosting games (only one city can use two stadia.

If this is true, then I don't see how Australia is any better prepared to play hosts. Both Countries have 5 cities with stadia 40000 or more (Van, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal) vs (Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth). Granted some of those Australian cities have more than one stadium that is 40000+ but if the allowance is for only one city to have 2 stadia then it does them no good.

Finally, Canada has more cities with the 2nd range of stadia (eg 20000 - 40000) in Regina, Winnepeg, Hamilton, Ottawa, Quebec City.

I'm not saying that Canada is prepared or able to host the WC especially so soon. But don't make out like Australia would be much better prepared.

I'm guessing that if a decision is made to move the cup out of South Africa, if it happens early enough Australia will become the host, but with late notice the US is practically the default backup due to the infrastructure requirements.

2026 maybe, using Commonwealth, Rogers Centre, Olympic Stadium, BC Place Stadium and Halifax if it gets the 2014 CG. Building new stadiums in Toronto (or somehow heavily expand BMO), Regina, Calgary, Winnipeg, Quebec City, Hamilton and...maybe Victoria.

Australia recently hosted the Rugby and Cricket World Cups. Canada, what? A U19 WWC in 3 cities out West. The Australian program actually looks decent.

Bottom line is this: Canada will not host when it is not ready to invest and there are better candidates in the running.

There will also be a lot of money out West going to the 2010 Olympics.
