Not the best long term investment the club ever made, no...but he did score over 20 goals in all competitions in his first season here. I'd kill for that right now.

Xavier only cost a half million and scored a goal against Everton, so unfortunatly for me he's not the winner. I'd say Heskey was a bad signing I did'nt like him before he came to us.

Heskey was a good and faithful servant to the club, not as talented as his purchase price indicated but he played hard, tracked back, threw himself at the game, and never did anything personally to embarass himself or the club.

Now Diouf and Cheyrou, you can't say any of those things about and they cost a pretty penny too.

Stan Collymore. I know he was passable, but he is still an a-hole

hear hear. He always tried his hardest and his lack of success had just as much to do with Houllier running out of ideas than his supposed lack of talent. I'm not saying that he would have been a world beater somewhere else, but history has definitely given him a raw deal.

I liked Mr Em. Hard working clubman, his downfall was probalbly being put in as the target man for Mikey.

Did we ever get a good player from Everton, was the question. Davie Hickson is the answer. One of the top 100

http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/past_players/players/hickson/images/profile.jpg

The transfer of 'dashing' Dave Hickson from Everton to Liverpool in November 1959 caused an unprecedented furore on Merseyside.
Hickson was the undisputed darling of the Gwladys Street and the man Kopites loved to hate. Liverpudlians were so outraged at the prospect of him donning red shirt that they threatened to rip up their season tickets and Evertonians stated likewise.

The local press was flooded with letters of protest but with Liverpool in desperate need of firepower to boost their faltering promotion push the deal eventually went through.

The following afternoon a bumper crowd of close on 50,000 were in attendance as the 'Cannonball Kid' (as he was known at Everton), made a dream start to his Liverpool career.

Despite the controversy that surrounded his move and fears that the Liverpudlians would not take to their new signing, Hickson was given a heroes reception when he ran out at Anfield for the first time in a red shirt.

His arrival put almost 15,000 on the gate for the visit of league leaders Aston Villa, ironically one of his former clubs, and one fan even ran across the pitch to plant a kiss on his cheek!

He responded by scoring two goals in a memorable 2-1 win and the Kop had found themselves a new hero. Although quiet and unassuming off the field, on the pitch Hickson possessed a fiery temperament and this often got him into trouble with referees.

On one such occasion, at home to Sheffield United in January 1960, he was sent off.

He had the sort of rep that Savage has now, only not as stupid with it! :)

Agreed. I can't believe he's trying a comeback. He's lost none of his arrogance.

I'll vote for GH's first signing, Jean-Michel Ferri. £1.7m (£29k per minute) for his two substitution appearances. Yikes...

Didn't we get a Keeper with GH that lasted a couple of matches.
Not Pegguy Arphexad, although he drew a good check for keeping the bench warm.

Fell-on-the Green-oh-no was a pretty fine whine, although it can be argued he single handedly won us the european cup by providing an ocassional rest to (not cover for) Sami Hypiaa. :) Plus, i think he was free, and worth every penny.

Did we ever get a good player from Everton, was the question. My answer is Steve Mcmahon, played for the bluenoses then went to villa and then became Kennys first signing.
A Liverpool leg end.

For a thread like this, only the Evans era will do. Leonahrdsen, Ruddock, Babb, Kvarme, Dundee ...

Alou Diarra was not a bad signing, Houllier was just stupid to let him go. Last year, he was probably the best defensive midfielder in France, even better than his namesake who just joined Real Madrid. I know we've got Momo now, but Diarra would've still been a nice player to keep around.

As far as my choice for this prestigious award, Paul Stewart hands down. Brought to the club by the man whose track record with signings puts Evans to shame, Stewart was the crowning achievement of Souey's plan to turn the club into a laughingstock.

Too fat and slow to be a forward, lacking vision and fundamental understanding of the game to be a midfielder, he excelled at missing large chunks of the season with injuries, largely due to the fact that words such as "conditioning", "fitness", and "stamina" did not exist in his vocabulary. The few chances he would get in the first team were pathetic at its literal sense. He would disrupt the flow of the game, look completely lost at times, and had an uncanny ability to never be anywhere near a goalscoring opportunity.

The kindest thing I could find anyone from the club saying about Stewart was this quote by Ronnie Whelan:

"In the early 90s at Liverpool, we had a few guys like Paul Stewart who arrived that weren't able to cope with the pace of playing with and understanding better players. In good teams, players are confident that they can smash the ball at each other and the recipient will be able to control it and move it on."

I must say I almost vomited when this thread suddenly brought back the memories of Stewart.
