"Manchester United will sign Fernando Torres for £26m next summer after agreeing to make a down-payment for his services, according to the Evening Echo."

"But it is now claimed Sir Alex Ferguson has agreed to make a down-payment of £5m in a bid to beat Chelsea to the signing of Torres, who netted four goals at the World Cup."

A lot of news agencies are carrying the story... If this is true, looks like Rossi will be permanently gone next season.

Meh, don't care. He hasn't shown me anything yet in La Liga. If he can't hack it at Atletico, he's not hacking it here.

I think he'd more than hack it, but until I see United announce such a deal, I won't believe a word of it - especially given the "esteemed" sources.

We don't need Torres, unless we want a permanent replacement for Saha, and at this time we don't even need one. Torres is NOT a leading scorer type player.

Unlikely, we still wouldn't have a 10 to back up Rooney. I'd say Smith would be in the most danger.

If this happends then I can see Fergie starting Saha every game and possibley rotating in the likes of Smith, Ole, and El Nino. Ole could possibly provide cover for Rooney at the 10 but we'll see. This would be great. :)

You don't spend £25m on a striker and then use him as a squad player. If Torres comes to OT he'll be first choice alongside Rooney.

It would make no sense for Atletico to accept a down payment from United now. Better for them to have a bidding war with Chelsea involved next year. Also, what would be the point of having Torres still playing for them when he'd just be passing time until his move to United?

I just assume that there are enough journalists like Guillem Balague who have linked Torres so heavily with a move to United for the last year, that they want to keep the story alive. Why no reports in the Spanish media though?

Maybe there was some truth to all those stories in the Summer. Maybe United did come close to bidding for Torres but got put off by the price, when midfield had to be the priority. But I don't think we'll find out for sure until next Summer when buying a striker will surely be on Uniteds list.

I'm not even sure Torres is the right man for United (Andy Johnson maybe?) , although DS does make a persuasive case for him.

This is all bullshit. 5m down payment my balls. The truth is he will be leaving in the summer for 35m euros, with MU his favoured destination. His choices are Milan, Inter and Tottenham. All this is according to Guilleme Ballague who is a spanish correspondant who knows everything about spanish football.

It's been reported numerous times that he prefers the prem over a move to italy.

Ummm.... not quite. Going through his bullshit the past 2-3 years, I firmly believe I know more than him regarding spanish footy. And I know diddly squat. :)

Just to be sure... why do we need Torres for again ? Sarcasm à part, Louis has been doing an excellent job and if Torres comes in at that price, he'd have to start, he would not be a rotation guy like someone said already. So it's a no for me. I'd like us to get a REAL back-up RB (Gary is showing signs) and, of course, a DM.

Ole isn't getting any younger, Smith is an unknown and Saha injury prone. Given the change in our attacking style, Torres is the perfect player according to most.

But wouldn't we be lacking in the end-product department? Although they are great players Ronaldo and Rooney have been known to waste a few pointblank chances. Torres fits that description. Saha, on the other hand, lets the offence build up to him and puts away his chances at a nice rate WHILE still providing movement up front.

That's why we have both Saha and Torres. The former isn't the greatest finisher anyway.
