Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney has slammed the art of diving and its increase in the English game.

After a weekend that saw Tottenham Hotspur win a crucial penalty in their 2-1 victory over Portsmouth when even boss Martin Jol admitted no contact had been made, Rooney has taken a strong stance on the subject of gamesmanship.

"I'd never dive. I'd like to think of myself as an honest player," he told the Sun.

"That's the way I play. I don't like diving, football doesn't need it."

The 20-year-old, who is set to return to England's team this weekend for the first time since his red card in the defeat to Portugal at the World Cup, starred alongside Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in United's 2-0 win over Newcastle United on Sunday.

 What an absolute friggin' joke.

I guess Mr. Hypocrite forgot about his blatant dive that aided in ending our 49 game unbeaten streak.

Hmmm .. Quite possible .. I'm still wondering why it didn't strike me before i posted that .. :p ..

Rooney dives, Ronaldo dives, Zokora dives and they'll still end up without the title ..

LOL, nice one! Too bad the ref doesn't have some middleground option to award the player instead of a penalty. If the reward for fooling the ref wasn't so large, then players would probably take their chances with the defense. But as we've seen :( , diving for a PK can win a match.

Btw a similar but opposite situation has happened in Basketball in recent years...with the defender "flopping" at the slightest contact and pretending he was pushed down. Both situations make my ulcer churn! I guess gentlemanly rules are no more.

Did he go on to say, "I'd never curse at a referee, and I'd certainly never stomp on another guy's crotch?"

Wayne Rooney is the missing link to the human race. The question is not whether he is a missing link, the question is what is he a link to?

Certainly not to the truth.

Did he go on to say, "I'd never curse at a referee, and I'd certainly never stomp on another guy's crotch?"

He also went on to say that he'd never applaud a ref for handing him a yellow card in a must win champions league game, nor push a club mate right in front of the ref in a huge knockout world cup match... he also went on to say he'd never grow unwanted facial hair nor leave the Toffees.

Dive Comes Before A Fall (http://www.arsenal.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=33159)

Prior to the World Cup Steven Gerrard's tumble over thin air was largely condoned and applauded by the same tongues that savaged the Portugese national side. 'It's part of the game, innit?' They shrugged. This is really the focal point of my article. In the cut throat world of top flight football and the financial rewards it reaps, most pros will do anything to win, if that means cheating this is what they will do. The crux of the issue is what can the governing bodies and we as supporters do to eradicate this problem?
