I've entrusted a lot of faith in this team and have been very patient!
Has Carrick's departure fcked up so greatly our midfield?

I think we have to get rid of these players as soon as possible and get decent backup!

I disagree. I'll go easy on you Mr Newbie, and assume you haven't just started supporting us. And so I won't tell you to piss off and support Chelsea if you don't like the team... Which is what I would say if you had just started supporting us just because Sportsguy has.

As much as I don't want them in the first team, Stalteri and Lee are our back-up full backs. What do we do in case of injury without them?

We also need two back-up centre backs, who are Davenport and Gardner. So the lanky one cannot leave either.

Ghaly is still slowly adapting to the English game. From what I have seen so far, it looks like he has some good skills. I'd keep him for a little while longer.

Davids and Murphy are the only two that I somewhat agree with you about. Davids is probably done at the end of the season anyway, so it's kind of a moot point. Murphy can move on once Malbranque has settled in. Until then, he's indespensible.

Even though i'm not the biggest fan of Stalteri, we may aswell keep him around as long as we dont see too much of him.

We need two players for each of the full-back areas:
RB: Chimbonda and Stalteri
LB: BAE and Lee

Edgar Davids will be off at the end of the season.

I wouldn't get rid of anyone from that list.

once all our players are fit, not 1 of these lot will be in our starting 11. as others have mentioned - we need cover for when injuries happen (like now). and murphy and ghaly are doing just fine atm. and IMO gardner is a better cb than davenport so i would not get rid of him either.

and if we were to sign nolan it will not be to replace any of these guys - it will be to replace jj.

forwards : keane, mido, berbatov, defoe, barnard

who i want to get rid of.....

gardner, stalteri (i think that lee can be cover for both), murphy........

I would have no problem letting Gardner go provided we could bring in another quality experienced CB... we are a bit fragile in that department especially when King is out injured.

As for the rest I disagree... they're all backups as mentioned and needed. Davids while past his day brings important experience/mentoring to the younger players. Mido has wanted to play for us and provides an aggressive spark that is sometimes missing. Murphy impressed vs. Pompey and Ghaly looked good too.

I'm with Colm on this one, the squad isn't the problem. Sure, we need to get our wing midfield straightened out, and that'll mean eventually offloading some central midfielders. But, I don't think we're suffering much because of the squad. It's good. Personally, I prefer Zokora, Davids, Huddlestone, Malbranque, Tainio and Jenas for our central midfielders. That leaves Murphy out (exactly where I like him). I rather like Lennon and Routledge for our wingers, particularly considering our surplus of central midfielders.

While I haven't been the biggest fan of Staltieri, and have sometimes been critical of Lee, I think they're both quality players and we're lucky to have them as backups. I'm keeping faith in Davenport, so that would give us 3 central defenders. Gardner is so big and athletic, that he's not the worst option to have as a 4th central defender either. Dervitte is supposed to have potential, so he's probably worth keeping too.

Up top, we're as strong as we've been in a long time talent-wise. Sure, Keane and Defoe haven't really started producing, but we know they're exceptional players. Berbatov will mend and adapt, and Mido has proven his worth, so it's just a matter of time for him as well. Although, I think he's lost some power, and clearly his finishing is off at the moment.

All in all, the big overhaul is done .. now we only need minor tweaking. If anything, I think this horrific start to the season underscores the need to keep the core of the team together. All this change has caused us to perform miserably. Good teams require good talent. Great teams require good talent that has had at least a season to gel.
