... ENGLAND Classics!

FOX Soccer Channel (FSC)
England Classics
England vs Netherlands - February 9, 2005

What classics will be next? I think the term is overused by FSC. I guess the game wouldn't be very appealing if it was called England "ReRuns".

I must say I would rather watch England classics rather than college soccer though.

I had that game captured back in 2005. It's not until last month that I had the interest to watch it when I clean up my hard drive. England's meaningless friendly are really a glorified scrimmages meant to milk money from viewers, when they do wholesale changes at half-time.

If they really want to do England classics, how about

1966 England 2 Portugal 1
1968 England 3 Spain 1 (2-legs aggregate)
1970 England 0 Brazil 1

I think England v Argentina (1998), England v Greece (2001) or France v England (2004) would also qualify as classics. But those all came after you stopped watching soccer.

I was thinking about a joke "Sunderland's Classics" but then I realized people would argue that the 1-1 draw with Man U would be a great classic.

Who stops watching soccer? I ain't one who watches soccer in Nevada Smith in conjunction of getting a "social life", remember?

Furthermore, there is exactly one England game after you were born can be considered "classic": 1990 vs Cameroon. All the others are heart-breaks... And a game in the World Cup quals is hardly important enough to be called a "classic".

I found it to be one of the five best EPL matches that season to be honest :D
"Classics" isn't ment to be a 'classic' in a historical sense. It's a relative term - showing notable matches of the past. For a one word definition in the title, indeed it's better than saying 'rerun'. The focus is never really on the team in the title (England, Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal, Milan, etc etc)... that's just their way of giving the program a name.

Oh really?
Remember when we went to Rome on the final day and drew 0-0 with the Eyeties to book passage to France 98, after missing USA 94? THAT was a classic.

True. A match can qualify as a classic without being part of the World Cup or Euro finals. Any real football fan knows that.

Any real football fan of a real football country who considers qualifying for the World Cup as a classic has serious inferiority complex.

Tell me which WCQ is considered "classic" in Germany, in Brazil, ... I can't wait...

Besides, any real football fan wouldn't confuse watching the game with getting social life...

Really.

What would be the consequence of losing in Rome on that final day?

That's not even a do-or-die game for England nor Italy. Italy didn't get the result they needed. Where did they end up in France 98? further than England.

Nowadays, finishing 1st or 2nd in the group is hardly a matter of do-or-die. Just like England X Poland last year. England won, they qualified. Poland lost, they also qualified. What a "classic"!!!

You're mental, mate.
Your definition of "classic" is far too strict and rigid. By your standards, there might be one or two matches in the game's history that would deserve to be granted "classic" status. That's ridiculous.

As for your "real football fan" garbage, well, get tae fock.

And you? a WCQ defined as a classic? Are we talking about China here? For China, their 2001 win over Oman that sealed their berth to J/K was the ultimate classic...

That's ridiculous.
No more ridiculous than your criteria.

As for your "real football fan" garbage
Yep, someone should tell BocaFan exactly that...

Correct. The terms "classic" and "do-or-die" are not interchangeable. Nor does one imply the other.

Someone has been staring at chinese characters too long and forgot their English. :p

Or better yet, someone has no clue what a classic is. And that someone is not me.

Yup! That would be a certain swiss banker who doesn't think England v Argentina (1998) is a classic. Or worse still, this spanner also doesn't think England v Argentina (1986) is a classic -- a match that is still talked about fairly regularily 20 years later.
