In "days of yore" when the F.A. used to go "on tour" but couldn't officially do it as "England" they used to play as Middlesex Wanderers.
It was the same with cricket when they used to play as the M.C.C. (Marylebone Cricket Club).
(I believe that I am right in the above on each count).
