Caught the tail end of the US Open Cup Final last night.

Heard this classic (to paraphrase as I fell off my couch, banged my head and can't remember the exact words used) from that idiot Bretos:

"Move over FA Cup, Coppa Italia and Copa del Rey.....the US Open Cup has something to say".

Like what Max? Hey, our Cup tourney can suck just as bad as our League?

Do us all a favour and just sod off you stupid tosser. The sooner he goes the better FSC and FSW will become.

But he is a kinda likeable...

He isn't too serious about himself. Read http://www.soccerloop.com/interviews/max.bretos/. Doesn't his description of how he got his first soccer job sound like a true geek?

He is enthusiastic and doesn't sound at all like Al Michaels. (i.e., Dave O'Brien during the World Cup)

I much more prefer him over the ESPN2 guys or the ABC World Cup crew - with the exception of Julie Foudy and John Harkes.

I hate Bretos but moreso Miles.

I'm not too fond of Foudy either. Harkes I like as well as Wynalda.

The problem I see is that too many former pros were "geeks" and still are. Soccer has been the sport no one in the U.S. really took seriously and it attracted people that may have been good atheletes but, not all there socially.

Paul Caligueri (sp?) comes to mind. I recognize his importance to soccer in this country but, they need to find something else for him to do besides broadcasting games or being a studio analyst.

That said, the Coppa Italia is a joke. Juve get crowds of 290 for it. Nobody except Inter really goes for it with any seriousness.

He did call USL-1 the A-League though. Even though USL-1 is on FSC.

I'm not too fond of Foudy either.

I didn't care about her one way or the other until she smacked down Lalas and Wynalda in the studio. She basically told Brent Musburger to listen to the athelete who had won the world cup. After that ballsy statement, I was sold.

i believe he then followed that with a league he referred to as the American Soccer League 2. i assume he meant USL-2?

He'd spent the whole broadcast talking about how this match was finally bringing something closer to the intensity on the field and enthusiasm in the stands that a) had been missing from previous US Open Cup finals and b) was more like what we see in more established tournaments. The statement you're so connipted about was just a summary of that trend and had far more to do with being pleased about local developments than it was an absolute comparison. But by all means feel free to pitch a snit about it; after all he did mention European and American soccer in the same breath and God knows that can't go undeplored, regardless of what was actually meant.

Ummm, OK. Thanks Max for your explaination.

You don't really think Bretos would say "undeplored," do you? A better guess would be that I'm Bretos' overly protective former high school English teacher.

On a another note, I think Christoper Sullivan has become a great analyst.

When he first started on FSC, he was a deer in the headlights with (really) bad hair. But besides getting a haircut, he has become very comfortable behind the mike and he sees the game so well and explains the nuances in a way that no other American soccer analyst does.

He makes great tactical and technical observations and doesn't get bogged down in "back story" crap that seems to plague so many soccer broadcasts in the US. (He actually tried during the USOC game a couple of times and made a mistake. Lothar Osiander didn't coach the NY Greek Americans that won three staight USOC titles, which is what Sullivan said. Alkis Panagoulias did. Stick to your strengths, Chris.)

He's not the most excited voice, but when you work with Max, he takes care of the enthusiasm all on his own and Sullivan is a nice laid back ying to Max' spaaztic yang.

I used to tune out the Fox MLS games and always watch the local broadcasts because I couldn't stand their announcers but if Sullivan is calling the game I stay on Fox now.

As for Max, he's an acquired taste. Yeah, he gets too excited and yeah, he has, to be generous, a few issues with details and facts, which is maddening. But his enthusiasm is appreciated and every once in a while he just says something so outlandish that you can't help but smile.

My personal Max favorite is from a few years ago during a Revs game. He was prattling on about how Adin Brown was a cousin or nephew (I forget which) of the singer/songwriter Bruce Hornsby. I was like "whatever, talk about the damn game." Shortly after that, Brown makes a great save on a break away and Max goes "And that's just the way it is, somethings will never change!" which is, of course, a line from one of Hornsby's better known songs.

You're not getting lines like that from Dave O'Brien or Jack Edwards!

I like him because he knows the game much better than almost all other american commentaters. He's at his best during the Argentine games because his excitement blends in very well with the atmosphere at the games.

Do I stand corrected, or was Bretos a rugby player?? When FSW did rugby, it seemed that Bretos was really really into it in a more genuine way than he is to football.

Max used to play rugby when he was starting out at FS World as an announcer in 1999.

He might be worth too much as an entertainment talent to risk himself on the rugby pitch these days.

I like Max's enthusiasm, particularly on the Argentine matches, but he absolutely horrible on Galaxy games.

It is also amazing to me that he apparently cannot pronounce the name of Brandon Prideaux, invariably calling him Pru-doh, even a few seconds after Sullivan pronounces Prideaux's name correctly.

I'd like the FSC announcers a little more if they wouldn't be so hasty to interrupt the PbP announcers at halftime and postgame.

A-MEN to that!!!!

Goddamn do they love to upcut the EPL announcers.
It's such a pleasure to hear somebody interrupt Martin Tyler as he sums up the half.
I know Fox has to hustle off to another "I made $50k working at home!" commercial, but if they are really trying to keep us watching by giving us the flavor of the event, they should leave the commetary alone.
At least let the announcers sum up the action instead of cutting them off midsentence.
Ugh!
