Those german teams arent gonna gain points if they keep on losing to clubs from places like Denmark.

Good thread!

We need this to monitor constantly how well we do as a whole in Europe.

I remember at the start of this season, we are optimistic that our boys could cover some of the losing grounds. But the game results yesterday and in the CL really sank our hopes of gaining pace on the top three; and France distances herself further from us while Portugal, Romania ... are closing the gaps between us and them.

Absolute disappointing results for Hamburg and Schalke. I expected Hamburg to pull off a draw and Schalke a ticket for qualification into the group stage.

Extremely unlucky for Bremen not to hold-on to that marginal lead over Barca.

Excellent win for Leverkusen and good qualifying performance for Frankfurt.

I hope Bayern and our teams could persevere and excel in the rest of the European matches.

I'm a bit shocked that we are so far behind France and so close to Romania.

Whats so shocking? Lyon and Steaua and Rapid Bucharest have done better than German teams lately. No big surprised IMHO we're where we are.

What most people frustrates is that of course we deserve to be where we are but at the same time everyone knows that in 8 out of 10 times Schalke would advance against Nancy or Leverkusen against CSKA Sofia (last year) - And in 99 out of 100 times Hertha should advance against Odense.

Countries like Portugal or Netherlands lose teams in the early rounds also but it doesn't weight so heavy because they start out with less teams from the beginning. Last year Romania scored the highest of all countries and it was because they only had 3 teams in the competitions and all of them went pretty far.

I think it's mostly psychological reasons (+ some badluck i.e. Stuttgart vs. Middlesboro or Hamburg vs. Rapid Bukarest last year) that leads to the low amount of points that Germany has. I think it would actually be better for Germany to have less teams in the European competitions. That would of course result in less money for some teams and that could actually be good for the National team (because clubs would buy less Carevics and Cairos and Madounis and instead give more younger players a chance to play in the first team).

Having less teams and actually becoming a "minor league" (on account of the 5-year ranking not based on financial resources) could be a good thing.

But I think the weakness of the 5-year-ranking would help us regain the 5th spot pretty fast because if Romania i.e. "has" to send more teams to CL and UEFA Cup it wouldn't weight so havy anymore if Steaua made it to the semis because teams like FC Sportul Studentesc or FC Politehnica AEK Timisoara would need to get high points as well to maintain the spot in the ranking.

I agree with the whole post except this example : Odense is better than CSKA Sofia was when i saw them play last season.

Other than that, good post :)

I'm happy for the Romanian teams but I'm always surprised to see German teams go out early, like Hertha and SHalke this year....especially since SHalke were semi finalists last year.

.

You could even believe that if these results weren’t happening year after year. But they are. It’s not like this is the first time German teams have been knocked out by outsiders.

It’s been happening regularly for the past 5 years. It can’t be explained away as bad luck.

Yes, it happened very often the last time and with the group stage system
in UEFA-cup it´s absolute necesary to reach the group stage, because
it give 4 matches, where the teams can collect points.

To say this is bad luck is to easy for me.
Bad luck was last year, that Mainz played against the later UEFA cup winner
Seville in the first round.

Frankfurt was a total positive surprise, who had expected this before
the season, only hardcore Eintracht fans maybe, but they absolute deserved
to qualify so comfortable, because they showed the passion, that is needed
to have sucess in cup matches.

At Hertha and Schalke i missed this, they played partwise as pathetic as we
did in DFB cup at Pirmasens.
Well, good thing is for the BL, that 2 teams from Holland, Russia and Portugal also failed to reach the group stage.

I say dont let Hertha and Schalke play in the UEFA Cup anymore, instead, (if they qualify), give their spots to the likes of Nuremberg, Gladbach or Hannover, who (just like us) have been waiting for this for years and would give 150% at any time! They also easily have enough quality to reach the group stage and go beyond that... Its not like its THAT hard, its just that some teams seem to think it is a punishment to play in the UEFA Cup, while the teams that I mentioned would take it as a blessing and also treat it that way....

Obviously that wasnt really serious, but as long as the Herthas and Schalkes and Leverkusens out there dont give a sh1t about the UEFA Cup, we will not be seeing them advance too far either...

It's funny that the german teams tend to be in a slump when they have to play UEFA Cup matches. Normally I'd say Leverkusen and Bremen could easily beat Blackburn and Ajax but right now after the recent performances of both teams I guess a draw tonight would be a good result for both.

Leverkusen should do well unless Madouni plays.

LOL!! We agree there! To this day, I still wonder why Leverkusen signed him!!

He was only ever "OK" at Dortmund when Metzelder was out there to hold his hand.......

Looks like the Bundesliga won't be getting that 4th CL spot any time soon. :(

The way things are going, we are more likely to lose a CL spot than to gain one.

You can really bet on that each time. It's like a curse.
