... I have some questions for you. You've researched, asked in forums, watched some games on tv, and now you have chosen a team or teams to support.

So is it ok to do the following (without seeming pretentious, annoying, or the like):

1) Buy your team's kit or a shirt or item with your team's logo on it?
2) Start learning your team's songs?
3) Talk about your team like you've been following them for years when in fact it's been maybe months or weeks?
4) Start hating your team's rivals, even though you have yet to see them play?
5) Like a different team's kit (due to design, colors, etc) better than your teams? (or even, dare I say it, buy another team's kit?)
6) Is it more pretentious to do any of the above if you're not actually from the UK (like me, a silly American ;) )

Looking forward to your responses. Thanks in advanced!

Scrap all that stuff and just have fun watching what you can catch.

If you can get together and meet some other supporters, then great.

Don't worry about all that other pretentious stuff.

Thanks. My sister is dating a Brit (who supports Liverpool while his brother is a huge Arsenal fan) and is in Europe right now. She asked if she should bring something back and I said sure, but I didn't want to be "that guy." I catch as many matches as I can, and I favor a few teams and several others intrigue me. But I didn't want to be that lame new guy who's wearing the gear but hasn't followed the team for long.

Thanks again!

I'm trying to pick a new team and sort of decided on Tottenham, but now West Ham, Aston Villa, and Manchester City have all entered into the equation. I don't want to root for ManU, Chelsea, Liverpool, or Arsenal, so my question is, who the hell should I root for?

Dulwich Hamlet.
As funny as you guys are trying to be, I must admit that I also follow Oxford United (ancestral home) and Richmond & Hampton Borough 'cause they're the Beavers and I know some people who live in the area.

Why was that question silly? I am an American who really doesn't know that much about the game, but became interested during the World Cup this Summer and have since learned a little bit about the strategy and some of the players. I did the Bill Simmons method of research (namely YouTube), decided upon a team, that team sold its best player shortly after I decided upon supporting it and has been in a slump since then. Aston Villa looks like about the 5th strongest team in the EPL right now, West Ham just got Tevez and that other guy (Mascherano (SP?)) in the transfer market, right before the window closed (Tevez is one of my favorite players) and Manchester City has really sweet jerseys. I think that the question was a semi-valid one, at least, for a neophytic football fan.

Pick Villa. I wished I were a Villa fan now that I see B'City has no ambitions besides CCC champions and Premiership relegation contenders every year. It's also sad when you sell your best players. So pick Villa my friend.

Also it's owned by an American so you have something in common.

In that case, you're a pretty rubbish Bluenose anyway, and I doubt the Heathens would miss you much.

Oh boy.....

Carrick was not Spurs best player.....King is. has been for some time now....

Its way to early to judge Villa so high.....although they do have one class manager.

Please do not support the hammers based upon Tevez or Masch, as you will be sorely disapointed within a year or 2. Support the based upon their immense abilities to produce excellent young players.

City??? Yeah, they are pretty MASSIVE come to think of it. ;)

WHY do you want to support a team anyways? Just watch as much as possible and see what team you like most. Don't judge what team you like just because of what position they are in within just a few weeks of the beginning of the Premiership. You know that a footbal club has a history...a long one, so why don't youlook into those. Also, you're bust taliknig about teams that are totally in odd places around the country...some are in London, in Birmingham, in Manchester...if you ever plan to watch them live, where is easier...

How the hell do you pick a team? I don't think I've ever watched a sport and decided to become a fan of a team after some deliberation process, I just watched it and it happened.
