Conventions, Piss Poor Moderation?

Being as we have just had a thread locked with an active conversation going in it, discussing the teams for the game in lou of one thats discussing drinking. As far as i can see did not break any of the TOS and unless i'm blind i dont see a sticky with the rules for this specific forum posted.

So how about sheding some light on these mysterious conventions, for the uninitiated, so we dont waste any more time posting on here.

Or is this a case of over zelous and unthinking moderation?
