Let me rephrase what these guys are trying to say. Most of the young people from the capital (northern part at that), and the ones outside Iran dont fast. The majority of the ones from elsewhere do though.

That’s not true , I know plenty of people of don’t live in the Northern part of Tehran who don’t fast, my fathers side of family are all from Kashan and they are a big traditional family , most of their kids don’t fast , I know people in Qom who don’t fast. Iran’s has a large population , 70 % of Iran’s population are 30 or younger, its fair to say that the majority of those people don’t fast .

Oh the same majority that wanted more freedom and thus elected a reformist? No, forget that, you mean the majority who elected a less conservative president? No forget that, you mean the majority that doesnt exist?

So its normal to walk in Tehran streets before Maghrib time and see people eating or smoking?

For the record, no one in my extended family(the muslim part anyway) even recognizes Ramadan, let alone fast. However coming and saying only a few people in Iran fast is simply false.

You seem to forget that people are turning away from Islam because of the government in Iran . You might not see anyone eating food on the streets during Ramadan , but behind close doors everybody is eating . The Islamic rip off uses force to make a false impression on people like you and Bob to make it look like all Iranians fast during ramdan , which is absolutely false, it’s a norm in any society that people will rebel against force and the Islamic Republic is forcing Ramdan on people .

Valanjak, no one has offered any facts here, specially you. On the other hand, having a very conservative president elected says a lot, a lot for you to have to show otherwise.

Who voted for him? When I went to Iran last summer , I asked most of my family members and friends if they voted for anyone during the presidential elections , most of said no and non of them said Ahmadinejad . You seem to forget that most people boycotted the elections and the people who voted for him only did it for economical reasons , not because he was a conservative who talked about Mehdi .

I didn't want to post, but valanjak, you have left me little choice.

I dislike people who because of their own myopic views and bias attack religion.

Some may avoid eating in public because they don't want to get into trouble. Some eat in public to rebel. However, many who do not eat even when not fasting do so out of respect for others. Many who are not even religious in Iran do not eat in public out of respect.

While it is true that many Iranians (in particular the younger population) have turned away from Islam and religion (apparently Zoroastrianism is something of the hip culture nowadays for the youth in Iran), however it has also resulted in some more liberal Grand Ayatollahs to call for a more secular political state. The most famous among these is Montazeri, however another younger one is also a vocal proponent of this. For you, this might be a minor irrelevant detail, but a discussion like this was simply treason 20 years ago, but now these people openly express that contrary to a long standing interpretation, religion and politics do not hand in hand.

valanjak, I ask you to be objective for once in your life. If you want to say something, don't throw out random speculation, bring some fact to the table. Don't say most without something to back it up with. I might be willing to agree that most do not fast, but not before I see some credible evidence.

Christ Almighty! (I thought that would be suitable here.. :D)

I didn't make a claim. I questioned his claim. Read my previous post as well. You guys are insistent that most don't fast. Give me some fact to prove this. Generally, the other side isn't supposed to provide facts to disprove your claim.

Do you want me to contact the Islamic Republic and ask him for some data about people fasting in Iran? No one knows the facts , the figures , but as a well traveled person in Iran who had many contacts with people from different cultures I could make that claim , its just part of my personal experience. You think people in Iran actually listen to these reform minded clerics ? A mullah is a mullah , and everybody in Iran has figured that out , you cant sit in a Taxi in Iran these days without hearing the driver bitching about the mullahs . There are people who still fast despite the negative image the Islamic Republic has created for Islam , but I more people fasted during shahs ERA then right now
