I have a big interest in Persian history and Iran is somewhere I have wanted to visit for a long time, I think I will finally get the chance to see it next year but I have a few concerns. I have backpacked before through south east Asia and Australia & I have travelled a little in Egypt but Iran is quite different to any other country I have visited.
Probably a silly question but do you believe I would experience any hostility when walking the streets of Tehran, Kermah, Shiraz etc due to me being a westerner?

No.
Have no fear English Gent, you can travel around Iran without meeting any hostility towards westerners, on the contrary. You'll recieve a warm welcome by the Iranians. We're well known for our hospitality.
I know at least 5 french who've travelled to Iran the last 4-5 years ,who've loved it. One of them that works in the same company as me, went to Iran by his own and travelled all around Iran with a back pack, he even went to Bam (it was before the earth quake), which is a risky thing to do for anyone actually, and had no problems.
The only pbs you'll probably have is the visa. It'll take some time. Be patient.

Iranians are well known for their hostility and a lot of my friends who have traveled to Iran have always emphasized that.
So have fun, and don't worry...no problems.

Freudian slip?
Assuming you meant to say “hospitality”.
