Rivaldo's Liverpool dream

Brazil star Rivaldo is reported to be keen on a move to the Premiership - with Liverpool his number one target.

The 30-year-old World Cup winner is currently struggling to make an impression at AC Milan after moving from Barcelona last summer.

He told the News of the World: 'If I could choose my next team, and if they want me, it will be Liverpool.

'It would be an honour for me to wear their red shirt and I would regard it as a dream to play alongside Michael Owen up front.

'The other day I was watching them play Chelsea and I could not stop watching their midfield. I have a few ideas about how I could fit in.

'I have decided that I want one or two seasons in England before the end of my career and I want it to be at Liverpool.'

Rivaldo went to AC Milan on a free, IIRC.

But prior to that, he had been linked with a move to NUFC, and I beleive that he was rated around £10million (about what we paid for Diouf.) I don't know what the fee would be now that the transfer market has collapsed.

That doesn't surprise me that Houllier doesn't want him. What is surprising is this quote from Rivaldo:

I hope he's right about Diouf, Cheyrou and Diao, but he seems to be forgetting that players like Veron, RVN and Henry (albeit to a lesser extent) were proven commodities before arriving in England.

Anyway, I'm not holding my breath to see Rivaldo end up at Anfield.

Signing a player like Rivaldo, a proven midfield general who is NOT in a end of career slump, and keeping him around for a couple of seasons can only be a good thing. He could teach Diouf, Cheyrou and Diao a thing or two. His influence over the younger players GH protects and coddles so much could be very profound.

Rivaldo's not having that great a year with Milan (5 goals in only 16 of 26 games). I think the physicality of Serie A is affecting him, and the EPL is more physical than Serie A. Or maybe he hasn't been the same since he got in the face with the ball during the EC. :rolleyes:

GH has done a lot to make sure that our players aren't divers. Remember when Smicer was accused of it in that game he "earned" us a game-winning PK? Vlad hasn't done too much of that lately. And Diouf also seems to have taken it out of his game, too.

Emile Heskey used to go down far too easily when he first got to Liverpool. Then GH went on TV and defended him.Emile stays up a bit better now.

It would be nice if he would come for about £40,000 a week tops. But that's not how Rivaldo operates. Besides, assuming these comments have been faithfully reported, what of his current position with AC Milan? If I were a Milanese, I would be right pissed off with him.

Well, one incident in the World Cup does not a cheater make, and if that were true, than Diouf and Emile Heskey should be shipped out Liverpool immediately. I remember being somewhat surprised when that happened, because I never viewed Rivaldo as that sort of player. He's a hard worker and can take control of matches. This is a team that even a proven international like Didi Hamann and "best hope" Steven Gerrard can't get to calm down and have an effective midfield. Even if he rarely played, his presence and advice would be priceless.

Of course, it's never gonna happen.
