Can anyone design a Skull and Crossbones with the skull wearing bifocals and a Liberty Bell type crack in the upper skull and SOB on the teeth? Maybe instead of crossbones - an oar to represent the maritime history of the region and a long handled scythe to represent the agriculture.

I'm a horrible artist.

Thanks

i didn't spend too much time on this, so i wasn't able to incorporate the "SOB" into the teeth. but anyway, here's a first attempt by yours truly. just pencil on paper at the moment, so there's a ton of cleaning up to do. i tried to make the bones look like they are the handles of the scythe/oar. and because i didn't do the teeth thing yet, i draped a banner along the bottom for the "SOB". and i even made a pass at the liberty bell crack (complete with bolts), bringing it right into the eye socket.

oh, and i found that it helps to be listening to AC/DC while you draw skulls. :p

tell me what you guys think (but be gentle ;) ).

That is nearly exactly what I imagined - the bone handles are perfect - I think I like the scarf better than the teeth - maybe drape it the same way on both sides

and, try one with the oar up - just out of curiosity

Thank you, Dillon! Great job - rep coming your way

thanks for the replies guys ... i plan on dropping the sketch into illustrator this weekend and making it a tighter and cleaner concept. i might try incorporating the tri-corner, but then you might lose the "liberty bell" crack, but i'm digging the suggestion to add hair.

i'm also thinking it's a bit unbalanced with the tool-side of the crossbones being on the right, and the bone-sides both being on the left. what if the oar and scythe are at top-left and top-right, respectively?

stay tuned ...

Soccer Prime yeah I guess so I just couldn't remember who posted but a good idea is a good idea.

i figured i would bring all the relevant images and progress shots of Bryan76's request for a Sons of Ben logo to its own thread ...

... and letting you know i haven't forgotten about it. just haven't had much time this week to get to it. hope to have more progress done this weekend, and definitely next week. i'm loving that Bryan76 has updated his avatar too.
;)

If this was the logo for the new Tampa Bay Mutiny supporters club I would say "excellent".

But apart from looking cool, whats the skull & bones have to do with soccer, Philly or Ben F.?

I think Bryan's idea was that the skull was tough and fearsome, while the various skull accessories are Philadelphia related.

I'm betting that the Barra Brava skull and crossbones logo is part of the inspiration.

I guess I am letting my bias come out. Unless your a Pirates, Bucs or Mutiny fan I never understood the use of the s&b, especially in soccer.

I was thinking more like a soccer-loving, jovial Ben smashing in a cracker.
Something like that. But if you guys love this s&b idea, don't let me stand in your way.

My inspiration was the DC Barra Brava as well as other SC's that have used some version, but personalizing it with local flair and not just using a Jolly Roger. It's just a suggestion and one which Dill0n has done such a great job.

I think Ethan's SoB idea could be the clear cut favorite after numerous non-starters, now we are just trying to throw out some logo ideas. Remember, it will appear everywhere from flags to stickers to shirts to banners - it needs to reflect or inspire. I think BB's skull does that - I don't know about the RCB...anyway, just a preliminary idea.

Again, thanks Dill0n for your work.

Same reason original pirates used it - menace. It looks fierce and mean.

Sorry, no disrespect Dill0n or others. Dill0n your Jolly Roger's s&b looks great.

I guess when I thought up the name "Sons of Ben" first I thought even abbreviated, it fit Philly fans and second, I figured the logo would be a smiling ole Ben kicking in a goal or three.

But great work Dill0n, Jolly Roger fans of the world would be proud. :D

I'd flesh out your idea then put it on this thread for the artists among us to attack it and improve it. We may find it suits us even better.

Please ANYONE with an idea, bring it to this thread. This is your shot.

Okay, can we add the bifocals back to the Jolly Franklin?

Dills
21 Sep 2006, 09:29 AM
oh, the bifocals are definitely coming, and i might even look at the suggestion made by someone (forget who, sorry) about putting long, ben franklin-ish hair on him, to give it the colonial look.

i was actually looking at old world war II posters for inspiration for another scheme, one in which big bad ben is rolling up his sleeves preparing to get down to work. kinda like this ...

... only not a chick.

but one thing at a time. i want to concentrate on the "jolly franklin" first.

first off, let me say no offense is meant by the un-political correctness of this poster, but this is more of the idea i had.

please delete/edit this post if i've offended anyone. :o

Yes Dill0n, thats more what I was thinking. Ole Ben kick butt and taking names (without the racial slurs).

what else was ben known for? maybe that could spur on other ideas ...

he was a printer, scientist (discoveries and theories about electricity), inventor (franklin stove, lightning rod, medical catheter, swinfins, bifocals), helped establish UPenn and Franklin & Marshall College, fluent in 5 languages ... something there could inspire a ben franklin themed logo (except for the catheter, hopefully).
