"Ligue 1 needs a strong OM"... thiriex dixit a couple of years ago.

this year even JMA is saying the same about PSG.

and they're right. but for those reasons and more, L1 needs a strong LOSC. because not only is lille a city that can carry a real europlayer, but their management is sound.

their keita and bodmer were our giuly and n'gotty. the dogues 5 years from now? be afraid. be very afraid.

We might by dangerous by that time, unless Lyon persists in stealing our players again.:p

Every country needs its teams in its largest cities to be strong. Thats a huge weakness in L1 in that you have weak teams in the larger cities(Paris, Lille, Toulouse, Nice, Strasbourg.) Lyon, Marseille, and Bordeaux are the only top 10 French urban areas that have good teams. The 7th and 10th largest(Nantes and Grenoble) are in L2. Its interesting that Lille is the 4th largest urban area but the 14th largest city.

Its interesting that Lille is the 4th largest urban area but the 14th largest city.the same can be said for lyon opposed to marseilles: marseilles is france's second largest city, but the urban community of lyon is bigger than marseilles'. that's because all the surrounding villages that have been absorbed over the years are considered as arrondissements of marseilles proper, whereas in lyon these are all part of the agglomeration but are still municialities in their own right. really the two cities are very close in size.

lille is much a much smaller town in statistics but all that hinterland makes the center of lille really feel big city. even if the LOSC has local rivals in valenciennes and lens, both those places, plus tourcoing, roubaix, douai all gravitate in lille's cultural and administrative orbit.

valenciennes is actually a pretty cute little place in parts, you can tell that 100 years ago it was a very rich town and there's easily a day's worth of things to see there, but now when i have to go there on business i stay in lille.

This both hits and misses the point at the same time. Yes, culturally and administratively Lille is the center of the region. When it comes to football, however, Lens remains dominant and I'm not so sure a new stadium will change that.

You may be right but if Lille become a really good team and Lens remain far from dominant on the pitch like they have been then more people will show up and take notice of Lille osc. There's more than enough fans in the region for both teams to have great support. 4th largest urban area can have 2 teams average 30,000. I dont see why not.

Perhaps so, but it would take a prolonged period of LOSC success combined with RCL underachievement to make that happen, IMO. The 4th largest urban area certainly CAN have 2 teams that average 30k per game, whether it actually will is a big question mark in my mind.

I think the region can support two teams. Lille will get more fans showing up to the games with the new stadium, but I don't know how much of an effect it will have. I think we will see a much stronger rivalry between the two clubs and that would be a great sight to see in Ligue 1. I hope Lens stay up to continue the rivalry, but it is looking bleak at the moment. If you guys go down, we can maybe take your fans and fill our 50k stadium.:p

Actually Lens are planning to expand their stadium to 50,000.

So what's the life of Luis Yañez these days? Is the guy still around....? I hope he's at least enjoying the wine. Damn, another nice product of the Colombian league that gets wasted on an Euro bench...

I really have no idea on how good this guy is. He hasn't played at all since coming to Lille in the summer.

Yanes scored with the reserve team last week.

Well a tie with Lorient did not help us at all on the final day. We dropped out of a European spot when it was in our hands. I am still proud of my dogues for the push into Europe. We were down at the bottom for about half the season, but the transfer of Mavuba has helped us to see a massive surge in results. I can only see us getting better next year with some new signings in the summer.

Lille fans are happy Lens went down because they think their team will get more media attention now. I dont live in France so I have no idea what will happen with that. I dont know why anyone wouldnt want to play their rival anymore.

The Lille fans I've talked with are rather disappointed. The rivalry is not hot as some people think. That and at least for next year they feel that the media will focus on Lens getting back up. Now, if Lens stay down longer than a season they will be right in thinking attention will shift to them, particularly if they maintain what they've been doing.

Eden Hazard named talent of the year. Seriously it's a pleasure to watch him play. He is gonna have a great career for sure.

Lens is coming back up it seems, so they can renew the rivalry.

Europa here we come! Lille had an excellent season this year. We did a lot better than what I thought we would have done at the start of the season. Hazard is named talent of the year and he can only get better.

Ok, the season is coming up. I feel that this will be a great year for us. We lost Bastos to Lyon which will be a huge loss for us. But I do believe Hazard will step up this year and fill in that void from Bastos. We also finally got a couple strikers. Aubameyang will come over on loan from Milan and we signed Gervinho from Le Mans for 6 million. Gervinho will be a nice addition as we finally get a good striker, something we have missed the past few years. Landreau will become our number 1 after making a move here and is a huge plus in goal keeping.

I think we will be challenging for Champions League spots this year. We'll end up in 3rd or 4th. First match is this Sunday at home against Lorient.
