Now that schools back, I really would like to upgrade from my standard Mac App TextEdit to Mircosoft Word. I'm using the new Intel-based Mac and want to know if its worth $125 Office download?
Thanks

why don't you give OO.o (openoffice.org) a try, it reads and writes to MSs format .doc as well as to the open document format......I've had it for a while, and use it everyday, it opens all the powerpoint presentations from all my classes and I submit work written on it.....my profs use MS Office.
Give it a try if you want, and let me know.

I thought I read that a good portion of the Intel Macs were have trouble running Windows. I agree about OpenOffice. Unless you're a power user in a big business OpenOffice is pretty much perfect.

my wife has a mac book pro and has office on each operating system (they were free -- legal, but no cost to us). so far, no problems. Except that she thinks powerpoint is absolute garbage compared to keynote.
she's right, you know.

from my experience open office is a piece of shit and plain copycat of the great ms office family. so far all its contribution has been itching my ass and tempting me to get one of these.

i would rather use a text editor of whatever comes with the os of your choice or i should just say either windows 98, 2000, or xp

Dude, that's fine....you don't have to use it if you don't want to, but let others do what they want.......seriously man.

I like Windows just as much as everyone else. Although I am thinking of switching maybe one day. But you my friend are a dumbass.

i've said it before and i'll say it again .... the only thing worse than a troll is an incompetent troll. I mean, he's terrible. he's trying to be funny, but isn't. He's trying to be sarcastic, have an edge ... but he doesn't.

You like Windows. Cool. Go enjoy yourself. Nobody's stopping you. Heck, we're encouraging you. Go enjoy Windows. Go on, now. Go enjoy it. Run along.

Well I have to use it for school (supposedly) I know the dirty evils, especially being a large internet surfer. But just can't bring myself to switch. Plus my other excuse was always the games (even though I don't even have time to play games anymore).

I thought I read that a good portion of the Intel Macs were have trouble running Windows...
Curious where you read that... can you post link? The new Macs (MacBook and MacBook Pro) offer the Intel Core Duo which is essentially two processors (cores) on a single chip; twice the computational power of a traditional single processor, so anything that a single Wintel processor can do Mac's Intel Core Due can do twice as efficiently and twice as fast.
With Apple's Bootcamp (http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/)beta and disk partitioned and running Windows XP, one could run Windows and MS Word in native application, or use Office 2004/MS Word 2004 for Macs (http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx) in OS-X, either way most Windows applications, particularly MS Word and MS Excel & Powerpoint would run faster on a Mac than on a PC.

For the record, I wasn't talking about speed of processing, but simply running the application(s) or OS.
I believe this isn't the only review I read, but it is one I came across last month. I may have seen the same headline on Engadget and Digg as well. Cnet: Mac Pro fails the Boot Camp test (http://reviews.cnet.com/4531-10921_7-6630672.html)
Also mentions of it on MacWindows.com - Cross-Platform Issues Specific to Intel Macs (http://www.macwindows.com/intelmac.html#082806b).

Actually, Open Office 2.0 Writer is a more than adequate replacement for Word if you are on a budget (i.e. Word didn't come bundled, etc.). I use Writer on both Linux and Windows machines without a problem. Make sure you are current, though. Early versions of 2.0 were problematic but I have yet to have a problem with current versions.
I have yet to use their spreadsheet, presentation, etc. Just haven't had a need, yet. If you have massive spreadsheets you might want to stick with Excel because it performs better.
If you are looking for a Word replacement, consider giving Open Office a try. It is free and if you don't like it just uninstall it and spend the hundo for the Office flavor of your choice. Personally, I think the support is better for Open Office if you are outside of a pure Windows machine.

First off, you didn't tell the truth. You call OpenOffice a piece of shit. That's being a troll. You called it a copycat. If that were the case I'm sure Xerox and IBM would have problems with the entire Windows line for copying them as well.
Here is the truth.
On a Windows machine MS Office dominates, period. Excel really has no competition. However, it comes at a price. Unless you get it bundled with a new computer, Office 2003 will set you back $165 (basic OEM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16837102084)) to $360 (Professional retail (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16837116142)).
Open Office is free, is able to read and write Microsoft Word and Excel documents, runs well on a number of platforms, and is supported on those platforms. It is a good alternative to Office products. On Windows XP it is portable; at work I run mine off a USB thumb drive.

The original poster had a problem with an Intel-based Mac with Word and someone simply suggested trying Open Office because, well, it is completely functional and usable on a non-Windows OS. Since it is free it might be worth a try.
It doesn't look like anybody is agreeing with you. It actually looks like people are just tired of your trolling.
