Could you please post more than just a link, what is the point of just posting a link with no comment. We already know exactly what is going on and it has been covered in the West Ham thread.

Newcastle No1 Given's injury life-threatening
tribalfooball.com - September 19, 2006
Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given's stomach injury suffered on Sunday had doctors fearing for the Irishman's life, it has been revealed.
Medical sources told the Daily Mail the goalkeeper's injury, a perforated bowel, had never been seen on a footballer and was usually associated only with car crash victims.
It's reported Given had a second operation because of further complications resulting from his collision with Marlon Harewood.
Without the surgery, there were fears that Given's health could have seriously deteriorated.
He woke yesterday morning in the intensive care unit at King George's Hospital in east London and the decision was taken to perform the second operation.
McDonald said: "In the dressing room after the game, Shay developed acute abdominal pain and it became clear he might have a surgical problem.
"As a result, he was admitted to a local hospital for investigation. Following those investigations, he was found to have a small perforation of his small bowel. He underwent surgery to repair this and that was successful.
Damn I didn't realize how serious it was.

Life-threatening? That's wicked? Hopefully this doesn't mean it's the end of the season or career for him.

reported yesterday @ the chronica (http://icnewcastle.icnetwork.co.uk/newcastleunited/chroniclesport/tm_objectid=17772579%26method=full%26siteid=50081%26headline=given%2dout%2dsix%2dweeks-name_page.html)l: and then on football365.com that he has a tear in his small intestine. looks more like a car accident than a on pitch collision. Six weeks minimum.
any injury to the lower abdomen is very serious as you can bleed to death internally before you even know you have a problem...especially if its the intestine
anyone hear any comment from West Ham or from Harewood?
no?
thought so...

In fairness to Harewood (though I still think he should've been sent off for a second bookable offence), it looked like he didn't see Shay until it was too late and still tried to tuck his feet so he didn't stud him in the gut. There should still be a statement of some order, but let's not completely vilify the guy.

Wow, I couldn't believe it when I read this on BBC about the car crash comparisons. I didn't see the incident, was it just a 50-50 ball and they collided?

Basically. Someone tried to sneak Harewood through, but the ball wasn't weighted properly (he was offside anyway) and Given came out to collect it before Harewood could get there, but they got there at the same time. Harewood looked like he tried to hook it around Given and didn't expect him to be there so quickly, and they both slid into each other pretty violently.

I need to see this challenge. I did not realize this injury was this bad, this could be awful.

I think it would be out of character for him to apologize after that challenge...an apology would be a statement of culpability.
After all thsi is not Harewoods first collsion with a keeper...
After colliding with the cement truck that is Harewood. I'm sure Given is not looking for an apology either.

I think Roeder's playing it right in saying that he's certain Shay understands that it's a man's game and things like that happen. If Harewood came out and even gave an explanation telling that he didn't mean to hurt Shay and it was unfortunate and all that spin-doctoring that'd be fine by me. I don't think he did anything intentionally, and he actually appeared to try and minimize the blow when looking at the replay. Was it stupid? Absolutely, and warranted a sending off, but to think that it was intentionally geared toward injuring our keeper is borderline conspiracy theory, imho.

WE are both agreeing it was stupid. But he left his feet to go for the ball, losing control. Just like he left his feet to go for the ball and upended Norwich City's Keeper who landed on his neck...
no where have I said it was intentional by any stretch. nor am I saying it was malicious. I am saying that if Harewood's lack of apology releives him of the culpability to the consequences of his mistake. It relieves him of being accountable for and subsequently responsible for Given's injury.
BTW if its really a 2cm tear in his small intestine, he'll be extremely lucky to be back in six weeks time.

The reports are varied. I think TF said it was three months, perhaps.
I think we're in agreement that Harewood should at least say something about the collision, even if it's as simple as 'It's unfortunate but I didn't mean to hurt him.' I think for him to apologize for something that could have just as easily not happened in the collision is a tad unreasonable.
What should happen is that the FA should review his casefile, as it were, and if it happens that Harewood has a track-record of harsh collisions with a keeper, then perhaps it should be addressed. Until then, he hasn't done anything worse than a yellow card and shouldn't feel the need to apologize in so many words. Until then, he's no Ben Thatcher. On the other hand, I will say this: he's clearly no Scott Parker.

He was trying to MINIMIZE the blow.
then that means if shay took it FULL FORCE then he could be out of the game or even worse DEAD.
That's just insane then, and Marlon Harewood is a mack truck of a man then.
