Canada advances to the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2006
Canada’s Men’s National Beach Soccer team scored an historic 6:4 victory against host Costa Rica on Saturday to qualify for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2006.
After heavy rains hit the venue of Punta Leona, Costa Rica over night Friday, making the pitch unplayable, Saturday’s encounters at the CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship were moved to Playa Jaco, Costa Rica.
Two goals by Canadian beach star Kyriakos Selaidopoulos and four more from Ian Carlos Diaz, Damir Deco Jesic, Sipho Sibiya and Kyle Yamada helped Canada to a 6:4 victory over the mighty favorite Costa Rican Ticos.
After losing 3:0 to the USA in their opening game at the CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship on Wednesday, the maple leaf beach boys stormed back to surprise everyone by winning three straight.
The Canucks sand wizards earned a 6:4 triumph versus Mexico on Thursday; a 7:3 victory over Jamaica on Friday and a 6:4 win against Costa Rica yesterday to earn a birth to the FIFA Beach World Cup 2006.
“We enjoyed competing in this tournament,” said Canada’s head coach, Ross Onagro. “I can not imagine what it will be like to play in Rio de Janeiro, at the (Beach Soccer) World Cup. We have to look at we have accomplished here and take the momentum with us to Brazil in November.”
The Canadians finished the tournament with a 3:1 record and a total of 9 points. They will join the USA to the fan favorite FIFA competition.
A draw on Sunday will be conducted by CONCACAF to determine which groups the qualifiers will be placed into for the FIFA tournament.
The FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2006 will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from November 2-12, 2006.
A milestone in Canadian Soccer
This is the first time since the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico that a Canadian non-youth men’s team qualifies for a FIFA World Cup
Beach Soccer: One of the fastest growing professional sports in the world
Over the past decade, Beach Soccer has journeyed from the beaches of Brazil to the hearts of millions of fans all over the globe.
The irregular nature of the soft-sand playing surface lends itself to an entertaining style of play, with the ball spending most of the time in the air and the players forced to improvise with moments of awesome individual flair.
The rules of Beach Soccer allows each team five players (four plus the goalkeeper) on the sand pitch at a time and unlimited substitutions.
There are three 12-minute periods and 3 minutes rest time between each interval.
