As long as they don't hire Carl Fletcher, I'll be ok.

Could turn out very well for the CBC. The u21 are in Canada 2007 and Canada has a good shot at the 2011 Womens world cup.

Great news, i just hope they dont pull of a TSN and only show matches featuring the Canadian national side but follow the entire tournaments, as they did for the Gold Cup in 2005.

Lets hope they are working on the National Team rights as well...as much as I like staying up to the crack of dawn waiting the end of an Anaheim Angles-KC Royals tilt to catch the Nats I am getting to old for it.

it seems like we might have three tournaments in five years...
2007 u20 wc, rumours of 2009 gold cup, good shot at 2011 wwc.

I'm a little worried about it frankly....

I guess it's too early to judge, but as long as they follow Rogers/TSN's lead from this year, I'll be happy, i.e.:

- Feed the commentary from England (not your own guys and not, dear god, espn)
- every game televisied in HD (how are they going to do that unless they let another channel run some?)
- repeats, repeats, repeats (and have it on-demand for those of us with Digital Cable )

jay good points.. when i saw CBC my first impression was a happy one.. but then i thought who they stole the rights off from and it was tsn.i just hope they have the same commentators.. or better commentators that when a team scores they actually yell or make their trademark goal yell (i.e goooooooooool) . that was the only thing wrong

but i wud be content if CBC can host it just like tsn did. i didnt even know CBC knew what soccer was nor did i see any socer mentioned or talked about on that station. i hope its like tsn

Soccer Night in Canada

Soccer Night in Canada

Well they are planning a 'Soccer Day in Canada' show, modelled on the 'Hockey Day in Canada' idea, where they cover Cdn NHL teams playing each other throughout the day, from east to west and have a lot of community stuff between games and between periods. They would be hard pressed to show 3 soccer games involving Cdn teams though. I expect kind of a s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out Direct Kicks. A more apt show might be 'Soccer Day in Europe' (with the mandatory CanCon - e.g., show a Bundesliga game with McKenna, English game with the Rat and a Spanish game with Jules - or spend the weekend in Norway!).

1986 Coverage

I was too young back then but vaguely remember watching parts of the 86 WC which was on CBC.

who did the commentary ? Did they have their own crew in Mexico or did they just use the UK feed ?

at any rate, they had the rights for 2002 WC so I don't expect anything to change now that they have it. I'm just wondering what they will do for the 3rd match in the First Round seeing as how games are played simultaneously. This year it was no problem as those games were played on either TSN or Sportsnet. What will they do in 2010 for Game 3 ? Use the CBC Newsworld channel ? or sublet games to CTV or TSN or The Score ?

Why not match it up with a Canadian national team game or 3 (youth, men, women)?

1986: CBC and SRC had their own crews and (gasp) in-game commercials.

just found out

CBC will partner with TLN, of all stations, for this venture.

I pretty much have an idea how it will go. The CBC will do all the games but on the Third Game of Round 1, TLN will do the games that involve the Spanish-speaking teams or Italy, if they qualify. Or the less glamouras game.

I am never happy when I hear CBC grabbing any new sports rights. Their coverage of any sport pales in comparision to the TSN or SportsNet. I find CBC like a wannabee American station when it comes to sports, all kind of overdramatized frills, over the top presentation, etc.....

Oh well they lost most of their curling rights when the CCA bailed on their contract plan and went to TSN's old sum of usage; and they are losing the Olympics; and they might lose their hockey, so atleast they are getting something new while losing almost everything else.

That's a bit of a funny comparison as it is TSN that dropped their "Sportsdesk" program to go with "Sportscentre", an exact clone of ESPN's "Sportscenter" and it is TSN that did their best to clone "Friday Night Football" from "Monday Night Football".

I'm not insulting TSN as they've done a good job but your contention doesn't fly.

yes but...

the former was only done after ESPN bought TSN.

I can't see CBC's coverage being anything different than their 2002 coverage. but if Canada qualify, look out for a zhitload of "human interest" story's and "profiles" like they do during Olympics. Other than that, there will really be no difference in our coverage regardless of who does it.

As long as Brian Williams doesn't tell us the time in 4different time zones every 5 minutes I'll be happy.

Not exactly.

ESPN has owned a part (20%) of TSN for many years, perhaps even for its entire existence. American investors cannot own more than 20% of any Canadian TV networks, as per CRTC regulations.

TSN made the decision to go the "ESPN Canada" route (they were actually considering changing the name) only after Bell Globemedia bought controlling interest in the network (80%).

As long as Brian Williams doesn't tell us the time in 4different time zones every 5 minutes I'll be happy.
Brian Williams works for CTV/TSN now.
