No mention of gapless playback for music. :(

No mention on this thread, but Steve mentioned it during the keynote. Gapless playback is in the new iTunes.

I'm really looking forward to the new iTV or whatever they're going to call it.

Yea, like Dante said, he did mention it a couple of times in his presentation.

I downloaded it and it went through all my songs saying something about gapless playback

Gapless playback is in the previous version (6.0.5.20) of iTunes. Unfortunately it is not in the current firmware (iPod Updater 2006-06-28) of the video iPod.

If I listen to Abbey Road on my PC, it sounds great. However, if I play it on my iPod there are annoying pauses between tracks. Hopefully, Apple will have finally addressed this issue and gapless playback will be available in the iPod firmware itself.

I'm going to download iTunes 7.0. Hopefully it will somehow enable gapless playback on the iPod itself.

Hmm - yesterday wikipedia said that the new ipod did have gapless playback, but someone deleted it I think.

On Apple's site iTunes overview site (http://www.apple.com/itunes/overview/), there's this:

Gapless Playback

Live albums, classical works, or any work that sounds best when it’s continuous, now seamlessly transitions from one song to another.

However, that's been an option in iTunes for a while. You could go under preferences and put a 0 second pause between tracks when playing albums using iTunes.

I just finished installing iTunes 7.0, and after it converted the library, it stated "Determining Gapless Playback Information" for all the songs in my library.

This is without my iPod plugged into my USB port. I'm going to wait until iTunes finishes first. Once that's done, I'll manually update the albums that should be gapless on my iPod and try to play them (like the aforementioned Abbey Road). At the rate it's going, that might take a while. Then again, my library is pretty big.

Yeah - it took a little while. I also accepted the "look up album art" because the scrolling through album thing was too cool to pass up. I now have to go through my entire library and figure out albums for all the random songs that don't have albums assigned. And clean up where necessary (for example Ray Charles' duet album shows each song as it's own album unless each song shows the same artist -- I decided to change all to just Ray Charles for simplicity of sorting on ipod as well - but it's a little annoying to have to make that choice.)

I just plugged the iPod in and now iTunes is "Updating library on Jeremy's iPod."

It looks as if they've gotten rid of the seperate "iPod updater" software. It's all in one now. When the library is done upating I'll get version 1.2 of the iPod software (it's currently on 1.1.2) from within iTunes itself.

Hopefully gapless playback is going to be a few mouse clicks away.

Maybe it's just me, but everytime I hear gapless playback my mind converts it to gaptoothed prostitute.

Cool. The 1.2 iPod iPod firmware version supports gaptoothed prostitutes. It works. I tested it.

I am very happy.

I'm really looking forward to the new iTV or whatever they're going to call it.The idea is great. But unless it can do 720p and the store sells shows/movies in 720p, I won't get one. But the iTV has to, right?

Oops - just need to select "part of a compilation" for the songs to group them with different artists.

The iTV will show anything you've got, whether you buy from the iTunes Store or your rip your movies. Heck, if it's anything like Front Row, which it seems, it'll even play movies you've ehmm, acquired (wink, wink).

NYTimes reviewed the new stuff and had lots of nice things to say:

Oh well, I love the idea, now I just have to wait to see if it ends being something I'd use. I'm not slumming it with SD. ;)
