Well I care, simply because it's (yet another;)) way for us to get at the Americans....

They're the only country that calls it "Soccer" although it is an alternative title in most countries, I know they call it "Soccer" because they've got another game that they call Football......

You know the one, the one where a big fat guy runs with the ball in his HAND???

Or as I call it "Arm ball".....;)......

Ok, arm ball is funny, but we are not the only country that calls it soccer. Canada, Australia, Ireland, and Japan also call it soccer. 3 of those countries, much like America, do so to distinguish it from their native versions of football. I don't know why Japan does (who knows why Japan does anything, Iron Chef anyone??)

Secondly, the big fat guy doesn't run with the ball, the fast guy runs with the ball, the fat guy blocks, get it right!!

I don't know about you, but I really really hate it when English people call an elevator a "lift." Can't they speak American?

A majority of English speaking countries call the sport soccer: America, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand. England is the only country that comes to mind that calls it football. All non English speaking countries, as the Japanese poster highlights, call the sport something else.

Why are the English so adamant about calling it football? Why do they still have the Royal Family? Why are they stuck in the past? Who knows.

the word "soccer" derived from the word association.

but still, calling football "soccer" is weird as well as calling some other sport "football."

we all know why its called soccer...but the correct name is football.

Just like someone who you dont know call u by thier nickname...

its just a view (in some ppls eyes) that americans "cant" play football so therefore should call it what we call it as that is its proper name...not some nickname

not really important though....

i thinks its more to do with the lack of foot-ball contact in american football.....we just wonder how u came up with that name??

any ideas???

Anyone know what the transliteration of the the name is in Mandarin and Wu (China), Hindi (India) and Bengali (Bengladesh)?
If soccer (or something close like Japanese "sakkah"), those 1.3 bill added to the list above might make a quorum. ;)

...blocks, grabs, rubs, hugs, kisses, etc... A very "masculine" sport indeed. :p

Back in the mists of gridiron time, in those days before the forward pass, most of the scoring was done by kicking the ball in various ways over the endline into the end zone. It actually resembled rugby much more than modern day American football.

Because the scoring was done with the foot -- football.

Class dismissed for today.
