View Full Version : Donīt be so shy, Bundesliga

According to record international Lothar "Loddar" Matthäus the Bundesliga
should be more self-confident.
"In Germany there the people have a vice.
They look envious to the foreign leagues:Spain, Italy, England.
They think everywhere the football is better and the stars are bigger
than in the Bundeliga.
But i say, the Bundesliga doesnīt have to shroud.
Many topclubs in Europe were interested in German national players like Philipp Lahm or Miroslav Klose.
Manchester United wanted to pay 25 million € for Owen Hargreaves.
With Mark van Bommel from CL winner FC Barcelona
and Juan Pablo Sorìn, captain of the Argentine NT, big names joined the Bundesliga.
When Bayerns Karl-Heinz Rummenigge states, that the BL doesnīt have big stars, then i must answer him back. IMO the Bundesliga raised its quality
and the players inspire their fans.
Here is my favorite top 11."

In the rest of the German article he explains
his nominations for his top 11.
Lothar Mtthäus presents his BL dream team (http://www.sportbild.de/de/nncs/sportbild/2006/09/06/4313300000.html)
About the player selection and some argumentations in the article are personal taste,
but IMHO itīs interesting to see (by reading such article) how the mood in German football
improved in the last one or two years.

Although Loddar was born just 10 km away from my town, I NEVER take his statements seriously! :p

Hmm Typical Bayern Fan arrogance ... without DFL(DFB) protecting you the team would be banned out of BL allready, for cheating etc.

Fernando Meira would've deserved a spot in central defense. :)

Can't agree with Loddar here (surprise, surprise... ). We shouldn't compare the Bundesliga with La Liga or the Premiership but with Ligue1. Because, there is a significant gap between the Top3 and the Bundesliga, and it would be delusional to deny that.
And Pantelic? Was he his coach when he worked for Red Star?

i think he worked for Partizan.

You're right, but Pantelic played for Red Star. So, this theory isn't true... ;)

I dont agree with his top 11 but I do agree with his general statement, the Bundesliga needs to be more proud, its a great soccer league and it often gets looked over unforuntily.

better beer, bette songs, better fans, better stadiums, better technique, better teamwork - quite simply better football and last but not least, infinitely better penalty takers!
if one was to draw a comparison between the most popular league in the world and the bundesliga based on last nights match between chelsea and bremen, then the only things going for the premiership are the more accomplished defenses, better media coverage and the obvious effect of the same on the bloody referees!!!
almost each one of the bremen players showed more intelligence and composure on the ball than their chelsea counterparts bar terry, ballack, boulahrouz and in the first half - essien... 2 of those are bundesliga imports...
frings dominated midfield, boros workrate rivalled essiens, fritz made ashley cole look like the overrated twat he is for long durations of the game and everytime klose got the ball, chelseas defense looked troubled...
if diego had a bit more speed, he could have really caused some damage... frings in particular bossed everyone in the one on one battles and even diego muscled lampard off the ball all too easily...
i guess in this age of defensive football, having a more disciplined defense counts for more than anything else, but i know which league id rather watch!

In the past yes. Now, they've just thrown away the rules.

"Loddar" was raised 10km from your town (I'm assuming you mean Herzogenaurach).
He was BORN in Erlangen. ;)
And when I read that article and saw some of that team, I about died laughing.
Even in his home region, nobody takes him seriously.

excellent post scorpio
the EPL is like pub football to me..
it's lacking in the skills that are unique to football..it lives off the asian market and the brilliant promoting and marketing they do. (slogans - "the greatest football league, you'll never write a fairytale like this" - all in ads that i've seen)
the primera liga and serie A have skills and tactics in abundance
BUT
for the reasons that u said at the top of your post, i'd rather watch the bundesliga as well, especially as it's the most even league competition wise from top to bottom..

For someone like me who grew up with the Bundesliga and regularly watches the EPL (last weekend for example the 'blockbuster' weekend) it's ridiculous to compare both leagues. On the one hand you have the Bundesliga with one European top team, low ticket prices and therefore full stadiums with a great atmosphere. On the other hand you have the EPL, the best league in the world (together with LaLiga), which features some of the best players in the world, but seems to become more and more the soccer aquivalent of the NBA.
Don't get me wrong, I def. like the Bundesliga (I'm German afterall ;) ), but to say that the Bundesliga is on par with EPL, would be the same as saying that the Sportfreunde Stiller as good singers as Robbie Williams f.e.
(to those who REALLY think that both leagues are the same qualitywise, please watch some EPL...)
