Well, I'm listening to 'I'm sorry I havent a clue': the best radio show in the history of , well, history. Humph says, I'm sure correctly, that Notts County are the oldest team in the league. How can that be? Surely you need at least two. What did they do? Wander around an empty pitch whistling thetheme from Robin Hood waiting for someone else turn up, whilst kicking at the occasional divot?

These were the rules when the football league was formed, 10 simple rules back in those days!

Good question but I bet they lost. Notts County 300-0 due to the lack of opposition. They must have been really pissed off when other teams started playing. All goals scored by Michael Palin, naturally.
With Rene Descartes on the wing (possibly).

Maybe there's a football historian out there who can answer.
I don't know, but there was life and football before the FA. I imagine the teams in the first league existed before the league started. So Notts may be the oldest football club in the league but they're not the oldest football club. Which I think goes to Sheffield.

Yes Sheffield FC were the oldest. But when and how did the game change from the original free for all between opposing towns resulting in death and depravity, into the spectator sport we all know and love?

This may be of help to your question, if you have the time to read it.

What puzzles me is that there were first 'Sheffield Rules' and then the FA rules, but Sheffield FC wasn't in the first league (I think).
Maybe not enough death and depravity?

Why are you confused Stomps? Of course you need two teams, but didn't it occur to you that some of the others had gone away? Old Etonians, Small Heath, Wanderers etc. Time for you to come home mate. You've been in the states too long. lol.
I used to play for LOng Melford. The 8th oldest football club in the world. How about that then? I also played for Clapton at the Spotted Dog....Ah, those were the days.:)

Tony by saying you played for the 8th oldest club in the world stomper will think you are 130 years old. He may well believe you were a musical influence on Robert Johnson.
