Dirk Kuyt's emotional moment of triumph ensured there wasn't a dry eye in the house last weekend.
Liverpool's 15million signing had returned to his homeland to collect the award as Holland's Player of the Year for last season- and the organisers had a surprise for Kuyt.

Kuyt's father, Gerrit, is battling cancer and was due to undergo an operation but stunned his son by his entrance, Dirk explained: "Dad is very ill and I don't know how long he can cope like this.

"I was so thrilled when he presented me with the Golden Boot. Normally they bring on a football legend to do the presentation. They had kept it a secret that my dad was doing it."

The Kuyt's hugged each other and during the speeches both men started to weep.

That started off more than 400 professional players and their wives off in the hall who could not hold back their tears either.

You really get the sense that the young man has an exceptional character and not only does he show a great respect for his colleagues but he receives a great respect in return.

I've been a fan of his from the first time I saw him play and whether or not he succeeds at Anfield I'd still support him. Class act on and off the field.

He is a player with heart, on and off the pitch. When he committs himself, there is nothing standing in his way. Can't wait to see more of him.

Wish him and his family the best though no matter what the circumstances.
