Does anybody really care?
Sawatzky represented everything that is wrong with US soccer!

I kinda care. While I recognize now he's not as skilled as some, he had heart and always gave 110% out there. Which is more than could be said of some of his team-mates then.

Agreed.
At least I knew SOMETHING, (for better, or worse), was going to happen in the last 15 minutes.

He certainly wasn't a very skilled player at the MLS level -created a lot of excitement with those steaming runs -problem was he didn't have control of the ball or even the ball most of the time.
Still, as others have said, you couldn't fault the guy for his level of effort, which always appeared to be 110%. You've got to like that -particularly in view of some of the other more skilled but less apparently motivated players the Revs have had.

Senseless run-and-kick.
Not to say that there's nothing "right" with US soccer...

STRIKE FORCE: Four Sounders are among the A-League's top 10 leading
scorers: 1. Ching (12 goals, 6 assists, 30 points), 2. O'Brien
(7-11-25), 4. Darren Sawatzky (9-6-24), 6. Viet Nguyen (8-6-22).

Darren has been one of the better players (read: higher scorers) in the A-League since the day he left the Revs. Perhaps he found his level, or perhaps his game continued to develop. He certainly had the raw materials, if not the polish.

I for one really miss Darren. He always was an injection of excitement and energy as well as passion that I don't feel we have coming off the bench anymore. I remember Jimmy Young always saying- 'he makes things happen' and he did!

Reminds me of an old song the Rev Army used to sing:
"Unleash the Beast
Sawatzky"
Still remember the game winner in the home opener vs. Tampa in 97. Not the greatest skill, but always hustle which resulted in more than perhaps it should have. Also wonder if he's run into the lead singer from Whitesnake anymore. :)

Classic, Jeff!
If you don't remember this, back at the Meet the Revs in 96, they were showing interviews of the players on the jumbotron, where they were all asked the same questions. One of them was something like "what was the most exciting moment of your career" where most players talked about winning a championship at another level or scoring a key goal in a big game, etc. Sawatzky said his was when he got to go backstage and meet the lead singer from Whitesnake.

Gawd, how about some appropriate lyrics to summarize the history of the Revs?
"I don't know where I'm going
But, I sure know where I've been
Hanging on the promises
In songs of yesterday...
Tho' I keep searching for an answer,
I never seem to find what I'm looking for
Oh Lord, I pray
You give me strength to carry on,
'Cos I know what it means
To walk along the lonely street of dreams..."
