OFFICIAL STATEMENT

The Club is delighted to announce that we've reached agreement with Fulham for the transfer of Steed Malbranque.

The French midfielder played over 200 games in all competitions for the Cottagers after joining from Lyon at the start of the 2001-02 season. He scored 32 goals in 160 starts in the Premiership.

Capped at youth level by France, the 26-year-old came through the junior ranks at Lyon before helping them to the French League Cup in 2001 and UEFA Cup qualification.

Martin Jol commented: “Steed is a skilful, versatile midfielder of real quality.

“He is a player we have always admired and we are delighted he has come to us, there were a number of other clubs interested. He is a player who can cover the left, centre and right midfield positions and will work well within our system.”

Steed is currently out of action with a groin problem and is expected to be out for around 10 weeks.

Steed said: “Tottenham is a big Club and it’s a fantastic new challenge for me. It’s an excellent squad and I’m looking forward to joining.

“I will be working hard on my recovery and rehabilitation in order to be ready to play as soon as possible.”

Bit of a bummer signing a player who is out for two months. Moving on...

Another move from Tottenham on loan for Wayne Routledge:

We have reached agreement with Fulham for Wayne Routledge to join the Cottagers on loan for the season.

Signed from Crystal Palace in July 2005, a broken foot hampered Wayne’s progress here last season and with the emergence of Aaron Lennon, he moved to Portsmouth on loan, where he made 13 appearances.

Martin Jol commented: “Wayne was very unlucky last season when he did so well in the Peace Cup but was then badly injured in our first Premiership game at Portsmouth.

“That gave Aaron Lennon his chance and everyone knows how much he improved as the season progressed, culminating with his call into England’s World Cup squad.

“In the meantime, Wayne went to Portsmouth on loan and he returned to pre-season looking sharp.

“It’s important that Wayne continues to play consistently in the Premiership. He is a valuable member of our squad and we want him to have the opportunity to continue to develop, so this loan benefits both him individually and us as a Club.”

Yes, but he IS Tony Blair's favorite player :p

Fantastic on the ball ability, bad passing. Only plays well in the centre - but when he's on, he's fantastic.

.....Mr. Bee, have you seen him play on the left? I for one, haven't. If you have, was he any good?

I believe that Martin hasn't signed him to be a left-sided midfielder/winger. I do believe that Downing will sign for us.

No, and you wouldn't want to. At Fulham we always had Boa Morte on the Left and never had to try anything different.

He is terrible on the sides, very little crossing ability and nothing in the way of defence. He has to play in the middle to be effective, but he is quite effective in the attacking mid and will stike goals in bunches.

Decent signing I guess.. pleased Routledge will go somewhere and play. Don't see him a Spurs player long term.

I hope someone else joins, not much point buying an injured player on deadline day otherwise.

I am pleased with this signing - especially if it is for 2m as is being reported. I have always liked malbranque - he will add some much needed flair and creativity to our midfield.

Long term I'm actually hoping Routledge has a Spurs future. I can definitely see Lennon in the middle, and since Jol has already started switching him from the right to left during games, there's a spot open for a winger/crosser like Routledge. His pace is very good, and his crosses would be very nice for Berbatov and Mido. Now that we seem to have the target forwards to make use of it, wing play will become more vital, which plays to Routledge's strengths.

Malbranque, Murphy, Tainio and Jenas are all fighting for one spot. I just don't think we need more than 2 of the 4, so 1 or 2 of them will be in the shop window this winter. Tainio is my preference to stay, I don't think Malbranque is the answer for us and I don't care for Murphy. Jenas ... it's a consistency issue. At his current consistency, I think he'll stick to a wall if thrown.
