What's your take on Shola this year?

A friend of mine, who hates Shearer, thinks that Shola is a confidence player and without having to play second man to Shearer, he will come into his own this season.

I still think Shola is lacking in just about every catagory but height. He might have been doing good at the beginning of this year, but will be shut down once defenses take the time to focus on him.

Well, right now the only way defenses can focus on him is by going to the training room. I agree that he is better off without Shearer, the two of them were too similiar anyway. He's never going to break Shearer's record, but there is no reason he can't score 10-12 prem goals a year.

For whatever reason, all 3 managers in charge since he's been there have raved about his ability and potential. He's still only 24, and with him, you know what you are going to get. He is going to score goals, but he is going to flub some chances where it's harder to miss. My biggest concern with him is a hip problem that has lasted for well over a year.

I think Shola is a good player who needs to be worked on. He would be fantastic playing alongside Martins or a pacy striker. He has size, he has some experience and he does have a head for "in the pocket " play, but unlike Shearer, he doesn't have the aggression or the clinical finish.

Any striker will be the focus of any defense. How the striker acts on or reacts to that pressure is what determines their success. He is lacking in the ability to read a defense, but that I think can come with more experience playing. Sholas suprised on a few occasions and I think he will come into something this season simply because he has to.

Am I confident in him?

Errr...

I guess my biggest problem with him is i dont think he has good touch, dribbling skills or can hold/protect the ball. If he is going to play as a second striker with Martins, then he needs to learn to not give the ball away so much.

I think Shola is going to pan out to be a pretty solid player for the club. He's still young.....has international experience (U21's) and has been around a lot of great players in his short time in the game. Once he's healthy I think he could be a 12-15 goal scorer......BUT....Newcastle needs a consistent 20-25 goal scorer.

I've been impressed with Shola for the last few games and do see him scoring 20 goals a season. Unfortunately, his fitness is suspect and that is why we need at least two more strikers at the club.

Shola has developed in to a damn good forward who is stil under appreciated. I aslo think he will combine well with both Martins and Rossi. Let's hope these guys can stay healthy.

With Shola Ameobi likely to be sidelined for between one and two months with a long-term hip injury Newcastle's manager is desperate to recruit another striker to play alongside Obafemi Martins, the recent £10m signing from Internazionale.

That's from the Guardian's article on the Rossi loan deal. I know he's banged up, and he could be week to week, but this is the first I've heard that he's definitely gonna be out for a while. They don't quote a source, so it may just be assumption.
