I have been a Pumas fan all my life. I started watching them as a little kid, I loved the puma on the shirt, and it helped that cabinho and sanchez were scoring goals by the truckload. I loved the way Tuca would take free kicks. I loved the cheers, the players, and I loved the fact that they were on canal13 at high noon.
One of the things I like about this particular forum is that since Pumas really has no natural rival (when I was a kid it was tigres), we don't have to put up with a lot of nonsense from other teams' fans. Also, the insight that the posters demonstrate is usually on the level. So to all of you: thanks. Keep it up.

Thanks for that (I wonder if I am included in this.....) I am a newcomer to Pumas, as to Mexican football.
I came to work in DF a couple of years ago, and live in the south of the city.. The company I work with have close contacts with the University, many colleagues and friends are ex-students etc, so they were the natural choice, I live 10 mins from the stadium, so again, my natural choice upon arriving here. So pleased that it was.
Although I really will always be City, my team from where I grew up, they are in the Championship, so it is hard to see them, and of course, you become close to a team you watch week in week out.

Well, I remember when I was growing up I'd spend some time down in Mexico I'd go down to visit family in Leon, Celaya, SMDA, Tototlan, Arandas, and eventually we'd head down to visit my uncle down in DF. Sure I saw some games in Leon and had fun but I think I really connected more with Pumas. My uncle is an UNAM alumni and hed take me down to CU each weekend I'd be down there to watch some games. Those were some great times and well, I've supported them ever since.

ive explained me before, but a trip to CU and possibly attending UNAM made me a fan. Plus the first real team I had exposure to.

I think it began thanks to my dad, but I wasn't really passionate about it until I began my studies there, which was in la prepa. The Pumas are a big part of the school life and its identity, with all the pride that represents being a student of the University, I can't believe when I meet some current or former student and tells me that he (or she) follows a different team, specially a certain equipo cremoso. If you feel the colors of the University then you embrace the team as well, and once you tasted the blue and gold... man is like the chant of la ReBeL: "PUMAS es la droga más fuerte que hay!!" You can't leave it.

They were the first Mexican team that I was ever really exposed to. I didn't even start paying attention to the sport until the 1994 World Cup when I was 22 despite the fact that my grandfather was from Germany, loved the sport, and was a HUGE Bayern fan.
In 2001 my brother in law married a woman from Mexico City whose family are all Pumas fans. When the came up here for the wedding a few of them stayed at my house for about two weeks because they wanted to see NY and Washington and all of that too. When Pumas games were on ( I think that there were 3 on TV during those 2 weeks) they asked if I minded if they watched it. They're enthusiasm for the team rubbed off on me and pretty soon I was completely caught up in it. They were some really good guys and they taught me a lot about the sport that I didn't know too, so I guess I started supporting Pumas because of their influence.
Oh yeah, and the big logo on the shirt. Almost every other team in the world you have to guess who they are by the huge sponsor's name on the front of the jersey. But not Pumas. They put it right there in front and taking up the whole jersey. You know who is playing when Pumas is on the field and the large logo is kind of in your face to other teams and their fans. I think that that's kind of cool.

I am Torn between TWO loves....I grew up loving CHIVAS because of my GRANDMOTHER she was able to hang with the Campeonisimo Team and watch them play when she was younger. As a child in DF in the early 80's Hugo was an Idol and Pumas became my team. When my Grandmother passed away 2 years ago, before she asked me to always love her Team CHIVAS and continue the tradition thru my family. I keep my love for CHIVAS and PUMAS together wrong or not. The way I look at it is a have double the hate for Las Gallinas de America.

That's a heavy burden to bear. But it could have been worse...she could have been an America fan.

My uncle slapped a Pumas jersey on me, when I was only 3-4.. We lived pretty far from Mexico City, but when Pumas played, he would make palomitas and buy refrescos so we could watch the games together (early, mid '80's). Been a fan ever since.
I didn't have a choice, really.. but I'm glad.
