How well has Lars Ricken ever performed in any sort of right-hand flank position? Keith's comments tend to suggest either not well or not at all, but while I'll obviously take whoever is the best man for the job, I can't say I'm thrilled about the idea of trying to turn Nuri Sahin into a winger. Time will tell I suppose.

As I remember, Lars' crosses suck, but he's played over there before.

As for Westermann, I rarely see any highlights involved Bielefeld, is he ready for a starting position if Metzelder were to leave? Or simply an investment for the next few years?

I don't know that much either. I've asked around today and the others say they think he could start for us in favor of Brzenska, Metzelder or Amedick as long as they are out.

They say he's faster than our other central defenders, but not really "speedy". They also say he's a bit of a danger going forward too.

I'd love to hear "jonam's" opinion of him. The people I've e-mailed are Bielefeld fans, so they are naturally going to pump him up.

Where do you think Metze would end up?

My money would be on Gladbach, Leverkusen or Schalke.

It's a shame he left Germany, like many other germans i fell in love with Odonkor this summer. Hopefully he can just keep on improving and we'll see him on the 2nd!

I think La Liga will be better for his development.

He's been there before.......

I know. But I hope he is cured now :D

LOL ;)

hey footyfan, since you seem to write the translations for the official homepage - do you perhaps know when the profiles of the youth teams will be updated?

Odonkor runs direction Spain
The news came suddenly over the last weekend but right now it is really a done deal. Borussia Dortmund home-grown talent and world cup star David Odonkor has been transferred to Spanish side Real Betis Balompie of Seville. BVB will get a transfer fee of about 6.5 mio Euro....

we lost odonkor for money but the deal was good as 6.5 bring new youth stars and what the need of odonkor if he is not in bvb coach plans?!
so
good luck for this german star and bvb will continue the revlotion>

We don't need to sign anyone offensively. Ricken or Sahin will step up a spot on the playing roster. Smolarek and Amoah both could play the wing too.

Our offense will not be the same. We will probably go back to playing the offense we did before Odonkor became such an integral part of it last season. In other words, Pienaar, Degen and Tinga will be charged with creating goal opportunities for the strikers.

However, I'd be disappointed if they don't make Bielefeld an offer for defender Heiko Westermann before the transfer window closes.

Another guy I don't think would leave his club, but I would love for BVB to inquire about is Mainz' Manuel Friedrich.

I still don't think losing Odonkor's spark as an option was worth 6.5M Euros. Not if the club wants to finish in the top five THIS SEASON.

However, on the other hand, if there was a time to sell, this was it.

I still don't think the deal was a smart one for the long-term outlook of the team, but again, if we use some of that money to bring in some defensive help (Potential replacement for either Metzelder should he leave or Woerns should he retire in the next couple of years), I would be much more accepting of this deal.

Right now, I think it's crazy because I saw nothing that hinted that Odonkor wasn't in BvM's plans. Of course, maybe Odonkor was the "odd man out" after we acquired Tinga.

But what do we do if Tinga gets hurt? Ricken? Smolarek? Amoah? Sahin?

None of those four players scares anyone. Odonkor and his speed did.

I'm hoping this sale was made to possibly make Bielefeld an offer for Heiko Westermann, who I will watch more closely over the next few weeks.

Other than that, put me down as being against it because I think it will hurt our chances to finish in the top five and to me that's more important than getting 6.5M Euros now.

We might have really hurt our potential to make a lot more than that in European football.

man i knew he was gonaa try and go!...he himself said just before the start of the season that if he doesn't get a first team place he'll look elsewhere....although he played well in the world cup i think it got to his head..he thinks he's way better than he actually is...only problem is dortmund needed him!

Well, I'm not so upset about the move anymore. BvM said in an interview that Odonkor asked BVB not to stand in the way of his taking this chance at Real Betis.

Odonkor wanted to go and BVB got more money than he's worth at this moment.

I don't like losing Odonkor as an offensive option as I'm not certain this 4-4-2 will work for us, but I would have rather let Odonkor go and take the money than have him stay around as an UNHAPPY option.

Yes, we will miss him, but we won't "need" him if this 4-4-2 works out. If it doesn't, we'll go back to the 4-3-3 with Smolarek, Amoah, Ricken, or maybe even up and coming youngsters Sebastian Tyrala or Abdenour Amachaibou in Odonkor's role.

Yes, I am still worried that we will lose something and possibly not be able to finish in the top five, but Odonkor asked the club not to stand in the way of this chance for him and the club did not.

I completely respect that.
