View Full Version : Why is Pascal Cygan so bad? [R]

Cygan is too slow to do anything. He is always out of position and Campbell or Keown has to cover for his errors. These players however can not always cover his back as was proved in the two-one defeat at the hands of Valencia. What do you think we should do?

From other posters . . . Cygan was captain of Lille and he played well for them . . . I guess he was in the CL as well? Either he's lost it or still is uncomfortable at Arsenal . . . I'm not too sure how his English is but defenders have got to communicate out there and Centre-backs have to be vocal (directing everyone) . . . maybe Cygan is uncomfortable with taking the lead . . . I don't know - he just needs help. I do think we need some depth at Defense though.

I think the selling of Upson is comming back to haunt us. He always gave it his best whenever he played for us and was considered 'The next Tony Adams' by a certain Alan Hansen.

No pace, no positional sense, lack of concentration. He can't do anything about his pace, but I'd expect a 28 year old centre back to be able to concentrate for 90 minutes and see whats happening around him. Looks like he'll get a few more games in the near future because of the injury situation so lets hope he does better today.

Actually he had a good game against Everton, and was a contender for the "Man of the Match" nomination. Don't know if he got it though. However "one swallow doesn't make a summer", and he needs more games like that.
It wasn't as if he was "outstanding", it was just that he was better than his usual performances.

He was the last Arsenal player to touch the ball before it crossed Everton's goal-line. Anything else you need cleared up?

I wish the guy the best but MOTM? The Everton goal was because he did not make a play. He just kept backing off.

I think that the injuries that have hit the back line are the biggest problem. When Cole and Cambell were healthy he only had to worry about himself. Since the injuries the whole back line has been exploited, granted some more than others, over the last few matches. I agree that Cygan has not been playing to the caliber expected, but he hasn't been getting a lot of help from the other backs. Take the Balckburn match Cygan was the only true defender after Keown was injured, that should have made hime take control of hte situation, unfortunantly that didn't happen. GVB has been out of posistion many times that have led to problems, both the goal v. Roma and Carew's first goal in the champs league. So to blame Cygan alone is unjust in my opinion, when no one has been holding their own of late.
Add this to the lethargic midfield play, and that is why the gunners were booted from the Champs League. I honestly think they are just running out of gas. I recently sayed with Brad Freidel while in England and attended the Blackburn match. Afterwards talking to Brad he commented that Henry told him that he was exhausted during the game.
I have faith, especialy after Viera's performance yesterday that all is not lost and the Gunners will come out on top when all is said and done.

Well we will get to see what difference Cygan makes good or bad. As he was just red carded in the FA Cup match v. Chelsea. And the gunners will be without him.

Unfortunately, yes. But only through the poor actions of "cheating" JFH and bad refereeing by David Ellery.
What made it worse was the fouling that JHF got away with, and the dive that got Cygan sent off!
Still the win was sweet enough!

I know this post is dead, but I just wanted to point out that Carew's first was Cygan's fault, from what I remember. He received the ball and ran right past where Cygan should have been standing, not Geo.
