View Full Version : Big bag / RFK / games right after work

It's week before school starts and I'm a school teacher.
So every day this week I'm at the school from 8am til 6 or 7pm in meetings and setting up for the year.
Point being, tomorrow when I get off work I'll have my massive backpack with me, stuffed full of books, binders and a laptop. I think the last time I went to a weeknight game, I had a smaller backpack with books and they didn't give me any grief. Anyone have experience with bringing a big bag into RFK? I don't have time to go home post-work / pre-game. And I'm on a motorcycle, or I'd stash it in my trunk.
Thoughts?

Dude, clear out your PMs.
Or just send me an e-mail - if we hook up before the game you can stick your stuff in my car.

Just did that, thanks.
I'll try to get there on time/early if I can for the trunk storage. If I don't make it, and other folks have experience with this kind of stuff, I'd still like to hear if they make allowances for folks coming from work/school/etc. on weeknight games.
Graci.

If you're near the barra - I'd be happy to stow it in my trunk as well.
no bother.

Trunk is the best way to go...your only other hope would be to get one of those big ole' canvas beach bags - the kind like an oversized purse. I've been turned away with a very small backpack (one that I've brought into a dozen or so Nats games, no problem), while some woman right a line over went in with a bag big enough for a set of encyclopedias...when I asked why, I was told that they didn't allow any "bookbags" with straps, but that ginormous purses were okay. I sighed, and marched back to the parking lot, where I found more than one Barra brother and sister willing to stow my stuff for the game.

Or me. Matter of fact, just swing by the Barra or SE tailgate and I'm certain one or another of us will take care of you.

In other words, if you can't make it to someone's car, carry a big purse for the day. Don't worry, we won't make fun of you.:D

I have hard bags on my newest bike so I don't such problems any more but I"m not gloating since I need to take my bike back to the shop. :( This is after the bike being off the road for a month waiting for parts after an accident.
As for taking in a big bag i'd advise against it. There is a chance security will let it in but the chance isn't good. They will let you bring your helmet in.

If you are not able to find someone who will let you drop off your stuff in their car, here is what I recommend doing:
1. When walking to/through the security people, take as much stuff out of your bag as possible and carry it in your hands when you walk through - makes your bag look smaller, and the security types might give you less grief.
2. I have been turned away with a medium sized backpack before, but I was always able to get in by going to another gate. They security people at the main gate (by will call) are usually the most strict. Try other gates if you are having a problem.
Espeically for weeknight games, the team needs to have some place available where we can drop off our backpacks/bags if they are not going to let us take them in. Many of us come straight from work, and don't drive cars to the stadium.

I love it, you can't get a 12 ounce plastic soda with the cap still on from concessions, but you can take a motorcycle helmet into the stadium.
Makes as much sense as TSA screening.

The team needs to win. That is ALL they HAVE to do for us.

You can wear the helmet to protect yourself when someones lipstick explodes. :)

I've carried a sizeable man purse (messenger bag) into RFK a few times and had no problem whatsoever with security. The guys on the sides are usually cool. Just look for younger guys working the detectors and chcking bags, they don't give a damn.
I hope you're not a terrorist...

I've worked as a bike messenger and mechanic for years, and they always give me crazy crap for my big, custom messenger bag. every once in a while i'll get in with it but usually i have to come up with an alternate plan...including tonite.

Trying calling DC United Customer Service (Fred Matthes) and explain the situation and maybe they can have you come to the Main Gate and help you. All this should mean is extra screening and as they're not expecting a huge crowd it shouldn't really be a problem for security to take a few extra seconds looking at your bag.

Uh, this is RFK security. They don't get paid "to take a few extra seconds." That would not be in keeping with their anti-customer service ethos.
