Sorry if this has been hashed to death on this board, but I'm genuinely curious.

Montreal has great attendance (again) in the USL, very solid fan base (complete with 'Ultras' - ooooo, nasty), successful team, building a football-only stadium...

So why would the MLS choose Toronto? Money?

MLSE ponied up the entrance fee (probably b/w 15-25 million USD) and built a stadium. I don't think there was such an offer from Montreal...

As in 'entrance fee,' yeah.

That's the way it works.

If Saputo wanted to go MLS, he'd have a good case for it, especially once the new yard is built. Hasn't happened yet.

It's not fair to compare the USL in Toronto's case, Montreal yes.

The Lynx have no media coverage/attention. Play out of a bad stadium, which is greatly in need of a reno. Not to mention a horrible, west end location. And they are simply a bad team.

This new team will flourish. I've never been to a Lynx game in my life and nor do I plan to.

MLSE paid MLS the expansion fee and have a stadium in construction and ready to go for next season.

Saputo COULD pay the expansion fee and build an SSS for MLS, but he chooses not to.

That is why Toronto is in MLS and Montreal isn't.

Montreal is run as a non-profit organization, which has it's advantages when it comes to taxes.

Saputo said he would not give that up to join MLS.

they speak too much French in Montreal.

Like Mark Langston said, it's like a whole 'nother country there.

So it came down to paying money, essentially.

The Lynx and the new MLS team are not connected in any way? will the fold once the MLS team kicks off?

I'd imagine the MLS could expand into Vancouver/Seattle/Bay Area as well rather painlessly.

Besides the fact that MLSE ponied up the money and had the stadium deal, Toronto has a very good record supporting its major league sports franchises with NHL (Maple Leafs), CFL (Argonauts), MLB (Blue Jays), MLL (Rock) and NBA (Raptors) teams that have operated continuously (ie, never folded) and are in no danger of moving.

MLSE did not build a stadium. Canada built the stadium as their requirement to hosting a youth championship series. MLSE taking advantage of the opportunity opted for an MLS side.

Maybe Youri & Zidane will head there next like Romario & Zihno did in Miami?

There is absolutely zero connection between TFC and the Toronto Lynx. The Lynx have expressed interest in playing in the new stadium but many questions remain to be answered regarding their future.

Additionally, as the University of Toronto has put together a new Varsity Stadium that will hold 5k, that may be the Lynx best opportunity for a new home ground if they decide to stay in operation.

Yes, Vancouver would be a very good fit. They have a new stadium in the planning stages and are now in the process of attempting to receive permission to build from the city of Vancouver.

Does this mean the Lynx will fold or drop down to the PDL? If they go down to the PDL, will they become a sort of farm team for MLS FC? I know the Chicago Fire Reserves are or were in the PDL , but I think they also had a reserve team also play an MLS youth club schedule.

i dont think the frenchman that owns Montreal Impact has any desire to share his money (as you have to do in MLS) with a group of dirty yankees.

That notorious Frenchman, Napoleonic scourge of the Americas...

Joey Saputo?

Anyway, apart for one or two bone-headed responses, thanks for your replies and/or opinions.

Wonder if one day the MLS can become big enough to split regionally into East and West.
