--Your weekend in the Premiership: United rampant. (http://football.guardian.co.uk/Match_Report/0,,1854662,00.html) The defending champions dominant. (http://football.guardian.co.uk/Match_Report/0,,1854772,00.html) Reading's comeback grabbed a few headlines. (http://football.guardian.co.uk/Match_Report/0,,1854608,00.html)

European wise, I saw what FSC had to offer this weekend, plus Bremen's win over Bayer Leverkusen. Didn't see much of Munich's win over Bochum, but I did see Owen Hargeaves magically had a case of the flu. Now the team is not happy with England's favorite Canadian whatsover. (http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=411302&CPID=22&clid=156&lid=2&title=Hoeness+hits+out+at+Hargreaves)

Perhaps the biggest surprise--well, the result, not the red cards--was Pompey's 3-0 thrashing of Blackburn. (http://football.guardian.co.uk/Match_Report/0,,1854604,00.html) On the discipline side of things, same old, same old for Rovers--Lucas Neill and Andy Todd sent off.

Of course, one weekend isn't enough to gauge success throughout the season--much less through the end of a busy month for most teams.

--Right now, this is a great move for Newcastle. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/n/newcastle_united/5270960.stm) Proven, young, explosive striker in Martins. Of course, his career at St. James Park could follow the path of other high-priced signings...

--As for MLS, my viewing was limited by my wife's desire to actually see me this weekend. Caught the second half of D.C.'s 1-1 draw against Colorado (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/08/19/AR2006081900858.html) and its poor play in the first half. It's the doldrums at this point. They have little to play for, but it will be interesting to see how hard Piotr Nowak cracks the proverbial whip with his team's most important matches still off in the distance.

Otherwise, do Crew fans keep their hopes alive after a 1-0 win over the Red Bulls? Four points out of a playoff spot, lots of time to go--perhaps yellow and black could still be seen come after the second weekend in October.

Same with RSL; this little run should temper the bloodlust after John Ellinger's job some.

--Those who are waiting for Serie A to start...get a nice comfy chair. It's going to be a while. (http://football.guardian.co.uk/breakingnews/feedstory/0,,-6028388,00.html)

--Not a good day for this MLS alum; you don't need to speak Danish to see Jean-Phillippe Peguero did his knee in. (http://www.brondby.com/article.asp?aid=38514&id=5)

In the statement Juventus said that their relegation had resulted in top players leaving their club and would have "serious consequences" on their income.
Hmmm...guess they should have considered this prior to soiling the game like toilet paper.

But the club also appealed for their broader, historic contribution to Italian football to be taken into account.
"It (relegation) will also, above all, gravely damage the identity of Juventus FC, which in over a century of existence has contributed to writing the history of Italian football with a tradition of excellence which is alive and current as demonstrated by the nine Juventus players who took part in the recent World Cup final," the club said.
Sorry, but relegation means little here. Juventus FC has not only "gravely damaged" their own identity...but because of their "tradition of excellence", called into question what their "historic contribution" to Italian football really is. How can we trust any of their championships?

Off topic, a bit, but I just had to vent a little.
Better now. ;)

Ouch! Poor old JPP probably wishes he had stayed with the Red Bulls.
