Great win today!
I am watching it on GolTV now (I know: not live), but just so I get a sense of how we fared.
Will post my comments/thoughts later on.

Excellent win. We needed it badly. However, we let Stuttgart get behind us one too many times. If it weren't for Weidenfeller's saves, this could have been a completely different result.

Congrats on what seems like a very convincing victory.

I think Stuttgart officially became the worst home club in Europe

It was great to win today, no doubt.
Now, my few observations:
-as someone pointed out, Stuttgart did have a number of chances. To me, they looked particularly dangerous the last 15-20 min of the 1st half. Cacau is definitely one of the most underrated stikers in the league, and with some help he could've put 1 or 2 in our net today. Which brings me to my next point.
-excellent game by Weidenfeller. He kept us in it, when we hadn't yet sealed it, and hopefully Low takes notice and calls him up. Had it not been for him, I think we would've been looking at a 1-goal loss, at best.
-our defense looked a bit frail at times, BUT we're still missing Metzelder. I think teams won't have as many opportunities when him and Worns take over the CB roles. So, in other words, despite missing a KEY defender, we pulled an excellent 3 points. Though, against teams that have more "lethal" strikers (examples: Klose, Kuranyi, Vittek) we could more easily pay the price.
-I was particularly impressed by Tinga. Ran his socks off, and can win quite a few balls in the midfield (I assume I've seen him a lot more than people here), but as I had told in my scouting report in the Transfer Thread, he is an all-around defensive mid. He doesn't mind getting stuck in, and will get a few cards (but that is expected considering his natural position of defensive mid).
Hopefully, when Kehl comes back, we can stick him and Tinga in the middle of the park with Odonkor and Pienaar further up the field.
-Pienaar (imho) was a ghost TO ME, at least.
-Good job to Frei on getting his goal, and this will probably help Haedo-Valdez get one, though he was close today.
All in all, from 1-10, I give the team a 7.5 today, and we're still waiting on Pienaar to finally show us "something", Kehl to recover from injury, and Haedo-Valdez to be the dangerous 2nd/wide striker he was with Bremen.

The profanity laced rant prior to my OP was the result of what?
I read through your long post and disagree to a vast extent and
I will retort to your misguided banter shortly but I must attend to certain other obligations.....in the meantime - great win and it's nice to see Frei on the score sheet......

Gunning, I think you should ease up a little...I am more of a Smolarek fan than a BVB fan, but even I agree with what footyfan is saying...I simply don't see how you can say anything against that with the performances Ebi has been putting in for BVB. Of course no one has forgotten the goals he got last year, but that was for half a year. What has he proved since/before than ?

Even with our NT, people are starting to say theres no room for him, and they make some good points, similar to the ones footyfan is making. And he has continued to miss sitters this year, I mean, look at the game against Bayern. He shoudlve scored TWICE! in his 10 minutes on the field or whatever it was. If he had scored than it wouldve been a different story. Even if he hadnt, if this was a one time thing, it sitll wouldve been ok. But its not, he's been playing like this for over 7 months, and thats including our WC disaster. And this is coming from someone who had Ebi in their avatar for the longest time. The only way he can possibly get back into the starting XI, is with a sudden showering of goals, or an injury to one of the strikers. His current play doesn't merit that.

That being said, Ebi is technically capable of being a great player. He needs to figure out how to, i dont even know what..how to put that to use, all the time ? i guess. I think footyfan wants the best for his team, and Ebi being like the Ebi he was last year contributes to that. If a player is not playing well, and costing the team points, than he should get his ass sat down until he fixes that. If he doesnt fix that or change it, than he doesnt deserve to be playing at all, let alone starting.

If Ebi had bagged a few by now, and still was getting limited playing time, than it would make sense to have this conversation. But until than, I think theres no argument..

whoa whoa....
If you re-read my posts, you will notice that my argument was based on footyfan riding Ebi way too much....that's all....it's obvious that for 9 months now...Ebi has been a shadow of his former self - for BVB and for the Polish NT in WC and other '06 friendlies- where he resembled a pub player.....I don't and never have disputed his off-form - what I did dispute was that Valdez is not neccessarily the better choice for BVB and Footy Fan riding and blaming Ebi for all of BVB's losses last year is not a palatable argument here....
thats all

Exactly. I'm happy we won, but a better team would have made us pay dearly for those defensive mistakes/passive defensive play.

Brzenska and Woerns couldn't do a f#cking thing with Cacau all day. It was left to Weidenfeller to stop Cacau.

Were it not for Weidenfeller, we're sitting here discussing a loss or at least a 3-3 draw.

Brzenska and Woerns have to be the f#cking SLOWEST central defensive combination in the history of football!

Outside of Dede, our best defender in that match was f#cking Valdez!

I'm happy for the three points, but the team needs to improve it's overall effort.

The defense especially has been far too passive so far this season.

Perhaps they will all follow Tinga's lead.

He and Valdez were f#cking everywhere!

Tinga was a great pickup for BVB. Exactly what we needed! :)

"Misguided banter?" LOL!! :D

Check the numbers man. Check the numbers and if you have any way to, find recordings of the matches I've referred to.

Trust me. When I decide to go that deep to prove a point, I've done my homework. :)

Thank you man. I will consider my case rested. :)

And for the record, I hope Ebi Smolarek does find the net again sometime soon. We need goals from him to reach our expectations for this season. Whether it be from the starting 11 or from the bench, we need some production from him.

I'm happy we got the win on Saturday without it, but we are really going to need some production from the bench before it's all said and done.

Pretty much agree. However, I would have put Tinga right up there with Frei.

Valdez was pretty much taken out of this match by our own defense. Valdez worked his ass off on defense Saturday. It's too bad strikers don't get credit for that.

BTW, both Tinga and Frei made Kicker's "Elf des Tages". Funny. That literally translates to "Team of the Day(s)", but it's pretty much a "Team of the Week."

Weidenfeller was left off in favor of Bremen's Tim Wiese. I saw Wiese on Friday night. Very good. Don't know that he was "better" than Weidenfeller. I smell a media conspiracy to get Wiese first shot at Germany #1.......

Don't want to bash on Weidenfeller as he was brilliant but compared to Wiese against Schlacke he had some balls to clear that were more or less not very well placed (two headers by Cacau). On the other hand Wiese had more really tough saves.

At all IMHO Weidenfeller is of course the much better keeper.

Back from Swabia with 3 points
Just match day 3 and already a critical situation for BVB. After the poor 1-1 draw at home against Mainz, the black-yellows finally managed to put their opponent away. By winning 3-1 in Stuttgart BVB left the bottom half of the table....
