why couldn't liverpool sell their away allocation for the opening game of the season?
are the fans still on their holidays or dont they regard sheff utd as a big enough game?
huge gaps were apparent towards the far end of the stand accomodating the liverpool fans, and towards the back end of the stand.
also, on the sky broadcast, they seemed completely silent, briefly coming to life when they scored the equaliser, apart from that all you could hear were the sheff utd fans.
also, in the close-ups, it was apparent many liverpool fans were wearing (red) england shirts rather than liverpool shirts.
why is this?
do they put country before club or is there some other reason?
and what do we think of the new yellow away kit?

i see, thanx for that.
so are you saying liverpool fans regard the national team as more important than their club side and that explains the poor away support today?
i only ask because i have never, in all my years of watching football, seen a set of fans prefer to wear the national side's shirt instead of their club's.
or maybe this is some new fashion trand that has passed me by? :o

well, according to radio reports, bolton's home game against spurs hasn't sold out, so anyone who says it's just liverpool fans who have stayed away is lying
according to other forums, the absence of many liverpool fans is explained by the fact it was an early kick-off today and the game was televised live on sky.
many fans with tickets simply chose to get a few extra hours kip to help nurse their weekend hangovers and watch the game at home instead.
i'm sure if it had been a big game the liverpool away section would have been full

Liverpool sold their allocation out from what their offical website says, you're just jealous because your team had an abysmal show against them last sunday. :p

yes, that appears to be true, however not all those with tickets travelled to the game, but i think we've estabished the reasons.

Where do these dick heads come from, I know its the beginning of the season but plastic Chavski's on here trying to stir up an argument, how is anybody except maybe Sheffield Utds board really bothered weather we sold out all the tickets. Go watch your plastic team.

boro sold out their allocation for the reading game, and they're at opposites end of the country.
it was just surprising to see so many empty seats in the liverpool end today, i know its been picked up by the press but they haven't offered an explanation, so i was just wondering.
looks like the early kick-off and the live television coverage kept a lot of liverpool fans away.

There is a possibility that some away fans are planning to go to Kiev in a few days. Perhaps this is a reason for missing the Blades game when it is on live TV.
And I did notice the England shirts - this is probably due to the fact that England fans no doubt spent money on new England shirts a couple of months ago and wore them in Germany only a few weeks ago. Wearing an England 4 shirt in red is easier to do for a Liverpool fan due to the colour.
I will keep my eyes peeled to see if any other teams fans are wearing England (or other) shirts in the stands.

great explanation.
it was v surprising to see so many empty seats in the away end, especially considering it was the first day of the domestic season, but i hadn't considered the champs league tie on tuesday.
have you any explanation for why the away support was so quiet, or do u think this was due to the lack of numbers?

v true.
it is easier for liverpool fans to wear england shirts than fans of most other clubs, because of the colour, but i'm still surprised, when given the choice, they chose to buy england shirts instead, do u think they put country before club?
and do u think, if the shirts were another colour, they wouldn't have bought them?
in other words, does their allegiance to england exist only because england play in red, and if england didn't play in red, do u think they wouldn't have bought the shirts and bought liverpool ones instead?

I am pretty sure they support both England and Liverpool and would support them regardless of the colour. I think the issue is that wearing a red England shirt in a crowd of red Liverpool shirts is gonna stand out less than doing so in a crowd of blues fans. Although as the majority of football fans in Premiership crowds also are England fans I don't see it being an issue at all.
And all summer loads of people have been wearing England tops everywhere in England. This is just a continuation of that. Who knows, maybe they came straight from the Old Trafford game? However unless I actually ask them this is just speculation. :D

i'm sure ur right, they support both liverpool and england, but do u think the fact they wear england shirts to liverpool games suggest they put their country before their club, after all, its a bit of a weird phenomenon?
of course, wearing a red england shirt in a crowd of red liverpool shirts isn't gonna stand out as much, but do you think it's disresepctful to the club, like somehow they're trying to camoflage the fact their shirt isn't a liverpool one but an england one instead?
do u think they didn't realise people would notice...?
i agree w u tho, i dont think its gonna be a huge issue amongst fans of other prem clubs.

well thats true, those red england shirts have been v popular over the summer, for obvious reasons, it was just surprising to see so many of them at a liverpool game, i have never seen that before
my other theory is this:
personally, i dont think much of the yellow kit, and maybe they chose to wear the england shirt instead of wearing the away shirt at an away game, as some kinda protest.
what do you think?
