I was just thinking in the Center Midfielder thread that whenever the term CM comes up, I almost immediately think of Gerrard. He is the type of CM that is so specialized at his role that a coach would almost never play him out of position.
So who are the other players that define their position?
For me:
DM is defined by Makalele and Manuel Fernandes
Wings are defined by Robben, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Figo.
Strikers are defined by Van Nilsterooy and Ronaldo(although not much as of late)
CD for me is Jorge Andrade(although Im sure its not the same for others)
Any others that stand out to you? What players are the perfect representation of what their specific position is?

Dennis Bergkamp as supporting striker...pretty much invented the role/revolutionized it.
Beckenbauer as Libero/Sweeper

Although Gerrard himself said it was his most enjoyable game in some time for England and he actually looked like the player he does at Liverpool for the first time in a while, so it can't really have been that bad of a decision. It's also worth mentioning that his coach at Liverpool often plays him in that position.

I know that this is not a regular player, but i think that many will agree with me when i say that, as a manager, Jose Mourinho defines the position of whingeing b!tch.

Pirlo defined a new position in football -- that of deep-lying playmaker or whatever correct term for it.

Riquelme hasnt exactly defined the position, but he's the last of a dying breed. A true number 10. Not many players like him around, and the few that are available do not get the freedom they need. Lampard, Gerrard, Ronaldinho, are attacking midfielders, but not number 10's.

Ronaldinho is a proper no 10 for Barca, if not Brazil.

But he played more forward than a classic #10. His WC failed because he was outof position by playing behind his usual place for Barcelona.

Juanele, what's up brother ? :)
RE: Pirlo
I don't know about that though. How many other converted #10's do you see play right in front of the defenders ?

Nesta, Rio, Terry, Cannavarro, Gallas all define the position CB for me.
I think Ryan Giggs defines/has defined Winger.
Roy Keane = Box to Box midfielder much the same Gerrard does now.

No mention of Vieira yet? Same box-to-box midfielder Keane was.

It only seems new because nowadays it's a bit uncommon. How about Guardiola, Schuster, Redondo and a host of others...

Redondo could play that role, but IMO he was just a complete midfielder with excellent techinque and skill.
The other examples do fit.
