View Full Version : The Lake Show

Four game unbeaten streak, three game winning streak, new stadium - these have to be the best days in the long and glorious history of the Royals. Sure, "Cleats" Wilson handed Salt Lake the first win, but they earned the other two. They picked the right time to get hot, because the schedule starts being cruel at this point. A Saturday game after a Wednesday road game just sets the table. Next week, a Saturday-Wednesday-Saturday set, the last two effectively being must-win games against Colorado and Los Angeles. At least they'll be at home.

Can they catch either of Colorado or Chivas? Both the Rapids and the Goats are pretty mediocre. The Rapids are playing horrible ball as of late - two straight 4-1 losses followed by a drab home win against the Galaxy. Fernando Clavijo's contract extension seems as warranted as Pia Zadora's Golden Globe. Nico Hernandez is leading the Rapids with six goals and four assists, which is a mere seven goals and three assists fewer than Jeff Cunningham.

(I'm pretty sure I owe Cunningham an apology - I thought the Jeff-for-Mathis trade would hurt both teams. Well, I was half right.)

Chivas USA is...well, maybe I'm reading too much into this. But they're playing in front of 90,000 Chivas de Guadalajara and Barcelona fans, none of whom have any real reason to sympathize with New England. And they settle for the tie. Sure, when Jesse Marsch is your scoring machine, your options are pretty limited. And a series of limp draws and opportune wins will get them into the playoffs, probably. Seeing as how they recently went to Pizza The Hutt Park and put hurting on the Hoopy Toros, they'd probably even prefer the fourth seed to the third seed. And yeah, Bob Bradley won a championship back in 1998 with that kind of intelligent strategy. Still, the 1998 Fire easily clinched a playoff spot, and Chivas USA hasn't.

But the bottom line is, Chivas USA is afraid to throw themselves forward, and Real Salt Lake isn't. That tells me the better team right now is in Utah.

Oh, yeah, the Galaxy. Well, if they don't win on Sunday, there's really no point in talking about them (outside of the "Who takes the fall?" and "Holy crap, are they really going to get David Effin' Beckham on a YOU SUCK ALLOCATION?!" discussions).

Good lord - I knew Jeff was having a good season but never realized he was doing THAT well.

The only thing that saves Clavijo and the Rapids in the Mathis-Cunningham trade is that they got FSL to pick up most of Mathis salary in 2006 and 2007. If that freed up enough room under the cap to get Karanka or Hernandez then the trade isn't as bad as it first seemed.

well, Cunningham leads the league in goals.

Hernandez joined the Rapids about 7 or 8 games into the season, didn't he?

to describe Chivas USA as "afraid to go forward" doesn't seem right to me. in fact, with Razov, Bornstein or Palencia, Garcia and Mendoza, they seem to buzz around the net a lot. Razov's on a scoring drought and they were relying on him a lot in the first half; others have to step up now.

RSL looked good v. the Crew. a dubious penalty was their only real weak spot. i never would have thunk it, but Carey Talley is playing some helluva soccer. he was all over the place on Wednesday, long before his goal. and Cunningham is easily one of the most joyful players to watch week in, week out in MLS, if he's not frustrating the hell out of you at the same time.

the Rapids are going to miss Cooke a lot methinks. we'll see.

Where'd Cooke go?

To get this thread going in the right directions, I wish I could post a photo of a topless Pia Zadora I would - but my work just caught up with my on-line porn search.

It begs the question of what is Pia doing now?

I would ask where is Clint Mathis now - but I know the last time I saw him he was in line at the breakfast buffet. Seriously - that is where I last saw him.

Was he pushing a wheelbarrow?

Dan, did Mr Worst Case Scenario Man hack your account?

You've got Landon! You've got Santino! I think that Herc Gomez still holds the record for most goals scored by a visiting player in Rice Eccles.

We still have John Ellinger.

Cooke is out for another 3-4 weeks with a knee injury. Happened in the Rocky Mountain Cup match on Aug 9th, just days after Dedi was sold. All of a sudden our strong wing play turned to crap.

The one thing you miss here is the GK situation. That's where I see RSL falling. no offense to Scott Garlick but of the keepers in the west I'd rank him 9th. (I think he's arguably behind Hislop, Wells, and Guzan in talent) And Jeff C tends to fade in and out of games.

That's because he's playing in Salt Lake, and we live on the East Coast. Either that or MLSnet hasn't been updated since April.
