Chelsea statement on Bates and Leeds
Thursday, Aug 17, 2006

Chelsea Football Club has issued the following statement on Ken Bates and Leeds United.

"Chelsea FC today (August 17) filed a complaint with the Football Association against Ken Bates and Leeds United for bringing the game into disrepute.

This follows recent comments by Mr Bates arising out of the dispute between Chelsea and Leeds over Michael Woods, Tom Taiwo and Danny Rose.

There are football procedures in place to deal with that specific dispute. Chelsea will comply with those, will not discuss the case publicly other than our previously stated position and will contest it vigorously.

However there are also existing football rules (E3 and E4) that prohibit rude, insulting and inappropriate comments being made about other club owners, chairmen and personnel.

In particular we are concerned by the implications of Mr Bates’ reference to the Chelsea directors as “a bunch of shysters from Siberia” and the discriminatory nature of this in terms of race, nationality and religion (rule E4). Such comments have no place in football, a sport which is rightly committed to fighting racial intolerance and bigotry.

Chelsea believes these comments are part of a personal campaign being waged by Mr Bates against our club and his actions cannot be allowed to masquerade erroneously as being in the interests of football as he claims.

Rule E3 states:
“A Participant shall at all times act in the best interests of the game and shall not act in any manner which is improper or brings the game into disrepute or use any one, or a combination of, violent conduct, serious foul play, threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting words or behaviour.”

Rule E4 states:
“A Participant shall not carry out any act which is discriminatory by reason of ethnic origin, colour, race, nationality, religion, sex, sexual orientation or disability.”

“a bunch of shysters from Siberia”

Best. Quote. Ever!

Stupid move in my opinion. Before, no one cared. Now, people might actually listen.

Chel$ki chairman Bruce Buck said Bates calling Chelsea "shysters from Siberia" had racial and religious connotations.
Is 'shyster' Yiddish then? I believe it comes from the German scheisse.

Do you know what Yiddish is? More to the point, do you know what scheisse means? Finally, do you know who Shylock was?

Calling someone a shyster might be considered libellous; knowing its probable origin adds insult to injury. According to Gerald L. Cohen, a student of the word, shyster is derived from the German term scheisser, meaning literally “one who defecates,” from the verb scheissen, “to defecate,” with the English suffix –ster, “one who does,” substituted for the German suffix –er, meaning the same thing. Sheisser, which is chiefly a pejorative term, is the German equivalent of our English terms bastard and son of a bitch. Sheisser is generally thought to have been borrowed directly into English as the word shicer, which, among other things, is an Australian English term for an unproductive mine or claim, a sense that is also recorded for the word shyster.

This is all just fantastic.

The funniest part -- besides the "Ma getting her tits caught in the mangle" bit -- is that good ol' KB has several of RA's millions in his bank account. So, if indeed Roman is a "shyster," well, it would seem KB doesn't mind profiting from implied shady activities.

EXCLUSIVE
By Wendy Walker
SOCCER minnows Farsley Celtic today stoked up the tapping-up row at Elland Road by alleging: "Chelsea have only done what Leeds did."
And Farsley are now inviting United chairman Ken Bates to put his money where his mouth is – and make a contribution to the Throstle Nest outfit if football billionaires Chelsea are made to finally pay out for young England under-16 prospect Tom Taiwo.
United are demanding compensation from Stamford Bridge after Taiwo and fellow 16-year-old Michael Woods left their Academy to join Roman Abramovich's Russian revolution in the capital following what Bates claims was an "illegal approach".
But Taiwo's early development came at Farsley, who nurtured the player from under-nine level until he was 11-years-old after he initially started coaching sessions at six with their then reserve team boss Alan Jones.
Clearly, Bates was not in charge at Elland Road at the time, and the rules are slightly different lower down the tier – Celtic are not automatically entitled to compensation – but Farsley chairman Andy Firbank claims they were "gazumped" just like United have been.
Rules
Firbank said: "Leeds took him from us in the first place and they never followed the correct procedures.
"We never got seven days' notice of an approach like we are supposed to – they just came in and took him out of our junior section, something they have done with players for a number of years now.
"The rules also state you can only take two players from a club's junior section per season – there are times when Leeds have taken four or five!
"Most professional clubs just ride roughshod over the rules, though we are starting to control the situation at Throstle Nest now. But I wonder whether Mr Bates would be willing to offer 10 per cent of what they eventually get for Tom to Farsley Celtic to support junior football.
"As he was quoted, what's the point in investing in junior football when big clubs just ignore the rules and do what they like? I totally agree. How does he think we feel when Leeds do it to us?
"It's not just about Leeds being gazumped by Chelsea. We were gazumped in the first place."
Chelsea have already offered United £200,000 for each player, a sum which Bates described as "insulting".
Leeds have made a formal complaint to the Football League, who in turn referred it to the Football Association.
The row then escalated last week when Chelsea reported Bates to the Football Association for bringing the game into disrepute following remarks about the Stamford Bridge board.
Farsley have now warned Leeds if they don't follow the rules when it comes to picking up players from their ranks in the future they, too, will be reported.
Firbank said: "We have written to all the professional clubs in Yorkshire informing them we will enforce the rules and any breach will be reported to the Football Association.
"We are happy for all our players to progress, and we won't stand in anyone's way but, like Leeds, we do spend time and money developing players into professional footballers. It's time for pro' clubs to recognise that and, rather than taking all the time, give a little back.
"Last season Nick Smith went to Bradford City from us. We have clauses where we will get payments based on appearances, sell-ons etc. And Bradford gave us a pre-season friendly so we got some recompense through gate receipts, money which can be put back into the junior ranks.
"We did write to Leeds asking them for a game but got no response. They played Harrogate Town and I don't think they've even got their own junior set-up."
