--To me, last night's showdown in the Swamp (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/08/16/AR2006081601874.html) was uninspiring at best. But still, Troy Perkins' efforts could have seen D.C. grab three points if Jamil Walker shot anywhere except Carlos Mendes' shins in injury time.

It will be interesting to see how Piotr Nowak tries to avoid a certain comfort level between now and the playoffs. Give Christian Gomez and Jaime Moreno some time off to recharge the batteries, maybe?

--Sigi Schmid sounds like a broken man, (http://www.columbusdispatch.com/crew/crew.php?story=205750) and for good reason. His team simply can't defend and half look like they've given up on the season. Personally, I hope the Crew and Schmid stay together through the offseason, to allow him to fashion a team of his own choosing. Then pull the rug out from under him. Crew fans may have a different point of view, your mileage may vary. And Chicago remains my best bet to give United a run in the playoffs (http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/sports/15291146.htm).

--Kyle Martino likely out for the rest of the season with a hip injury. (http://www.whittierdailynews.com/sports/ci_4193725) Since 2003 and the Confederations Cup, has another player's standing for club and country dipped as much as Martino's?

--£13m for Hargreaves? (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/4798403.stm) Still too much. But some think he might be worth it. (http://football.guardian.co.uk/Columnists/Column/0,,1851941,00.html)

--I know the whole "scandal" in Italy has lost its teeth after appeals, but if Juve stay up, is Serie on the same level or one step up from the WWE? (http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=410424&CPID=21&clid=128&lid=2&title=Juve+still+hopeful)

--Another good piece by the Guardian today, this one on the three teams entering into the Premiership and their chances. (http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,,1851934,00.html) A good start is necessary, but that's pretty much common sense.

The amount of playacting that goes on in both is about equal.

Let 'em fix matches, if that's what their fans want. The WWE makes a lot more money than Olympic wrestling.

I don't know why UEFA would want teams accused of fixing matches participating in their tournaments, but I don't know why the Italian federation would give slaps on the wrist for match-fixing, either, so I hope European fans enjoy the next few years of "I wonder if this game was clean or not?"

The Italians give slap on the wrists for leaving horses heads in men's beds and blowing up magistrates.

Fixing soccer? *piffle*
