Charlton Athletic have landed Andy Reid from London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

The Republic of Ireland international has signed a four-year contract at The Valley after finding first-team opportunities at Spurs hard to come by.

Reid could cost The Addicks £3 million and his new manager Iain Dowie is delighted to bring in the winger.

"Everyone is aware that the Premier League is about quality and ability on the ball, so we are delighted to clinch Andy's signing," Dowie told the club's official website.

"He is a player of immense quality and potential, and I believe that this is a very good acquisition for the club.

"Andy is still a very young player who can go on to achieve great things.

"He has a great range of passing, a tremendous set-piece delivery and also possesses an eye for goal.

"We are also delighted to have secured his signature in the face of some stiff competition."

The 24-year-old moved to White Hart Lane in January 2005 in a £4 million transfer from Nottingham Forest.

But he was unable to make his mark under Martin Jol and appeared just 27 times, whilst struggling with his fitness.

During the summer, he was linked with a switch to Wigan Athletic as part of a possible swap deal involving Pascal Chimbonda.

Sunderland also failed with a bid for the wide man, but Charlton have stepped in to hand Reid the chance to establish himself in The Premiership.

Dowie has been frantically trying to add to his squad before the start of the season and links up with fellow recent signings Scott Carson, Djimi Traore, Cristian Bolanos and Amdy Faye.

please note what i highlighted in bold... personally i'm happy spurs got 3 mill for reid... if i was a manager.. i would pay 2.3 tops..

Sunderland failed because they offered a deal in installments and not enough upfront.

You should be happy with that amount. He's pants. Really wide ones.

EDIT: Just made me laugh to see what Fatty said back in May:

Reid: "I'm a Tottenham player. I've got four years left on my contract. There's no reason why I would want to go anywhere else."

"I don't think there will be a lot in and out. I think we'll bring in a couple of quality players who will add to the squad but I wouldn't imagine there will be wholesale changes"

It's a shame it never worked out, after all the fuss Spurs made to get him. His debut showed promise (vs Portsmouth i believe?) and he scored a good goal vs Villa, but after that he struggled with fitness and fatness. Good move for all.

Just remember, Spurs moved for both Reid and Dawson simultaneously, and Dawson was well worth it. I was intrigued by Dawson but didn't know how he'd do in the Premiership ... looks like a good move in hindsight, even if Reid tagged along for the ride. Now that we've gotten 3M back for him, the Dawson/Reid deals look very good. Even if we did lose a tad on the Reid end of it, that was good business.

Best of luck to Reid, I think Charlton is the ideal place for him actually. Andy was never a winger, and the attempt to play him there never panned out. At Charlton, he can be the creative point and show his best form. Now if they'd only take Danny Murphy back too.

I actually think this is a fantastic piece of business for both clubs. As has been said many a time before, Fatty was never a left winger and we were never going to play him in the middle. So he was never going to fulfil his potential with us. He would only have ever been an unnecessary draw on our wages - putting in the occasional good performance, but never shining consistently. Charlton on the other hand have not had a real playmaker since Murphy was at his peak. With some time and some condtioning, Reid can fill that void for them. In the meantime, we can put that 3mil (as well as his saved wages) to good use.
