I was going back through MLS trademarks live and dead the original names for Miami and New York were going to be Fusion Miami F.C. or Miami Fusion F.C. and Empire F.C.
Most interesting is that in the case of Fusion Miami F.C. it is still a live trademark while MLS let Miami Fusion and Empire F.C. go dead. Maybe there IS something to Don Garber mentioning Miami twice this year (in April and again in August during the State of the League address). More than that, it was RE-REGISTERED as late as January 31, 2006 meaning the League possibly intends to use it again in the not too distant future.

I'd love for that to happen. They had their own little stadium and anything. I miss the Miami days.

I have a feeling they renewed the trademark so that either they can sell retro merchandise or to keep Section 219 or somebody like that from snapping it up if the trademark lapses so they can sell merchandise.
I highly doubt it's for a future MLS team in South Florida.
Check on if they've done the same for the Tampa Bay Mutiny.

Yea, they still own that. It's live too.

It would be pretty cool to have Miami Fusion FC and Tampa Bay Mutiny MLS expansion teams in a few years. :)

I could use that ugly 1996 Mutiny jersey I have. :)
Seriously, though, the reasons why MLS dumped those two franchises are still valid reasons today and they're the reasons this is unlikely to occur anytime soon.

Don't count on Tampa Bay. All the trademarks associated with Mutiny are dead.

Ok Kenn, I'll bite.
Why would:
a) Don Garber mention Miami twice this year? In April and then in his State of the League address when he rattled of the list of potential expansion cities.
b) If MLS didn't plan to return to Miami soon why re-register the trademark in January of this year?
c) Why would they allow other old trademarks like the Mutiny to go dead?
d) As anyone knows Tampa is NOT Miami and the fact that you lump both together tells me that maybe you might not know as much as you think you know about Miami and MLS.
What makes you think a MIAMI club if properly run and playing today?
Maybe i'm just reading too much into the tea leaves but when i see a newly registered trademark right under Toronto with a slightly new name and logo i get curious.

Over the years, Garber has mentioned a great many cities as possible expansion cities. I have no idea why he'd mention Miami twice. I'm sure he's mentioned St.Louis and Cleveland numerous times.
b) If MLS didn't plan to return to Miami soon why re-register the trademark in January of this year?
As I said, better to keep your trademarks (as the NFL has with the Baltimore Colts, among others) so that you control what those trademarks are put on. If Section 219 thought it could sell Miami Fusion t-shirts and could get the trademark, they might do that. Better to keep that in house. Just saying that it doesn't necessarily mean that a return to South Florida for MLS is imminent.
c) Why would they allow other old trademarks like Mutiny to go dead? As anyone knows Tampa is NOT Miami
Really? Thanks. Considering I grew up in Tampa, I was wondering why we got those occasional hard freezes in the winter.
Someone above said the Mutiny trademark is live. You say it's dead. I have no idea.
and the fact that you lump both together tells me that maybe you might not know as much as you think you know about Miami and MLS.
I will gladly admit I know nothing about Miami's possible return to MLS because, quite frankly, I haven't thought about it (like I haven't thought about Cleveland or St.Louis or many other places that seem to be vaporware at the moment).
But the fact that you, in another one of your 18-20 daily posts in an attempt to fit in instantly, have gone from Fact A to conclusion Z in a matter of seconds without considering other possible explanations tells me that maybe you're trying a bit too hard.
But what do I know? I'm just an old man.
Maybe i'm just reading too much into the tea leaves but when i see a newly registered trademark right under Toronto with a slightly newname and logo i get curious.
Maybe you are. You get credit for the find if they ever do it.

I love when cranky old people feel threatened enough to go personal online.
If i REALLY wanted to "post in an attempt to fit in" (as if i care,) I'd post half of those threads about single table and promotion and relegation, etc ad nauseum..
i think you just feel threatened that i won last weeks attendance prediction contest on my very first attempt.

That's just it Kenn and others, they haven't not to mention i noticed they changed the name and logo just slightly from the old Miami Fusion FC. Also unlike Tampa Bay it's not a Live trademark that was registered years ago and has been left to just hang out there but it is a newly registered trademark. I've looked more into it since last night and i see the subtle differences between the old Fusion and new Fusion.
Additionally it is at the top of the trademark list (meaning i guess that it was recent registration) right up near the Iterliga, Inter Toronto FC, Toronto FC, Houston, Chivas etc.
Here is a list of their 10 most recent registered live trademarks as of today:

And there is perhaps the most compelling alternative explaination that not even Kenn thought of.
Maybe they are protecting that trademark so Miami FC doesn't take it.
I'm going to dig up this information and show you what i mean about 'subtle changes' in the logo and name that kinda of make one go 'hmmmm, Chivas, Inter Toronto, Fusion Miami F.C.?"
