So I am planning on nixing my landline and getting a DSL service. I don't use my home phone anymore as my wife and both use only our cell phones. I am sick and tired fo dial up. I figure the cost to get dial up and the cost to simply have a landline will equal a standard DSL service. 30-40 bucks a month.

Thing is, I really don't know (since I have no experience) who is a good provider and who isn't. I understand that some servcies aren't available in my area but I just was wonderign if anyone has any input an whom to avoid and who to go with.
Thanks in advance.

PS. no I do not want cable as Comcast would be my only option and they have screwed me once to often.

I know you said no to cable, cause of Comcast......and all though they have their quirks we've had cable for about 6 years now, and are pretty happy with the service....we do lose service once in a blue moon, and one of those times was cause our old router crapped out and we thought it was comcast's fault....but overall its pretty good.....now price is another issue, but you get what you pay for right?

Understand but I was a long time customer of Comcasts, and between billing issues and service issues I have since decided to no longer giove them any of my money. I know it's different for different customers.

Can't help you with the choices because I don't know enough about the options in your area but let me say that it's a smart decision switching to broadband. As you mentioned, you'll be paying about the same for great internet speed. You will also have the option to add a 'broadband phone' service (http://www.sunrocket.com/services/plans/limited/)for only 10 bucks.

Verizon used to screw me over with $50+ land-phone bills every month. So when I saw a Vonage ad for the first time I didn't hesitate a second to switch. And I've been paying less than $27 for the last 15 months, $17 for the last 4 with Sunrocket! Now Verizon is almost begging me (well, there's a 'come back for a great low price' card in my mailbox every other week) to switch back and lowered the price by almost half. Nice try.

At my home (not here, I am at Uni right now) we get DSL through Bellsouth. Which basically makes it go through the phoneline (if that is not how it always is?) so you might want to check with whoever your (old) phone service provider is to see if you can get in your zone.

DSL is always "thru the phone line", but it is not always required that you have phone service. However, most telcos do not offer "naked DSL".

For example, I have AT&T, and I must get phone service in order to get DSL. My DSL rates are going up, so I'm thinking about switching to RoadRunner (which you can get where I live "naked" - that is, without getting standard cable service) and some kind of VoIP telephone service. Might be able to save a few bucks.

The bad thing about getting cable internet without cable TV is that you might be charged a bit more per month...that's certainly something to look into before getting it...of course, you could always try to lock yourself into a promotional price which would help.

Pints -- Even if you and your wife have cell phones, it's still kind of nice to have a land line. If there's a contest which requires you to give a phone number, or some other situation where you may not want to give your cell number, you have that land line to fall back on. It's a nice way to screen calls and not get disturbed when you're out at dinner or at a game or whatever.

And if you have to make a call, you don't have to be paranoid about overages and minutes and all that, but YMMV.

I'm intrigued! In the US can you have broadband without a phone line?

I'm in the sticks in the UK so maybe it's different for people in towns over here too but I HAVE to have a phone line so that I can have broadband. Is it different in the US?

So, Andy -- You must have a phone line attached to your house for DSL, but you need not actually subscribe to phone service. With cable, you must have a cable attached to your house, but you need not subscribe to cable TV (although your broadband internet monthly fee might be a little bit higher.)

Turns out that Verizon does indeed allow you to nix your landline and simply have DSL. It seems that Earthlink and Verizon are the two larger DSL providers in my area, so it's now off to compare the two.

go with Verizon!

I've had DSL since it was first introduced in my area and have never had a problem. I think there has literally been 2 or 3 times over a 4 year period where I couldnt get online. and in each case, the problem resolved itself in a matter of hours. this is just my opinion based on my personal experience

Turns out Earthlink you need to have a landline account in order to get thier DSL, Verizon you don't So I am leanign towards Verizon, BUT and it's a big BUT

I would say out of the 30 reviews I have read or heard about Verizon, maybe two are good.
