Need help with a quote by a past player

I'm trying to remember the exact quote and who said it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It was said by a defender who played in the forerunner to the EPL I believe either in the pre WW2 era, or maybe right after.

Something along the lines of "Either the ball is going past me or you are, but not both."

I may have just butchered it and it could turn out to be a fake quote just attributed to the player but if anyone has ever heard this, please let me know, and what the original quote was, and who said it. Thanks.

sounds like pretty much every centre half I've ever met, I know I've said it to a few forwards before.:p
