Complete Potential USA Coaches List, in order of preference:
1) Jurgen Klinsman. The granddaddy, the favorite, the best. Lets get him if we can. But if not...
2) Peter Nowak. The best of MLS. Hard-edged and unafraid. Has done wonders so far with Freddy Adu, our future star.
3) Steve Nicol. The Best Scotsman available. Has done good work with Dempsey, Twellman and Noonan.
4) Frank Yallop. As former Canada coach, he knows CONCACAF inside and out. Currenlty works with Landy Cakes.
5) Bob Bradley. The best American available for the job. Doing good things with Chivas USA.
6) Dave Sarachan Second best american for the job. Currently nuturing Rolfe and Jaqua for future national team spots.
7) Carlos Queiroz (Manchester United assistant coach) according to Jen Chang, this name is in the mix. Lost out to Arena in 1998. Also used to coach Real Madrid. Impeccable pedigree...but will he connect with US players?
8) Sven Goran Erikkson Not so excited about this guy, but he has the experience. Though he did pick a 17-year old who had never played real football for his squad.
9) Zico did wonders with Japan. Just took a job in Turkey. I'm throwing his name into the mix.
10) Jose Pekerman former Argentina coach. Obviously had a load of talent, but seemed to connect well with his players. Could it translate to US?
11) Aime Jacquet 1998 French winning coach. Just a thought. Then again, he is French.
11b) Dick Advocaat - former South Korean coach.
12) Bruno Metsu former Senegal coach. Not my first choice. Recommended by Jen Chang. But, once again, he's french.
13) Eric Gerets Belgian who coaches Galatasaray. Also recommended by Jen Chang. Dont know shit about him.
14) Kasey Keller Let him retire and become our coach. Or better yet, the first player-coach in World Cup history.
15) John Harkes current assistant to Arena in New York. No pedigree.
16) Eric Wynalda current wise-ass commentator for ESPN. No soul.
17) Alexi Lalas has to learn how to be a GM first.
18) Cobi Jones Would add instant fashion-sense to our team.
19) Earnie Stewart probably too busy in Holland.
20) Tab Ramos is he around?
21) Glenn Myernick. This would be a step backwards.
22) Shep Messing. Just Kidding.
23) Marcelo Balboa. Ditto.
After Euro 2008 options:
1) Guus Hiddink (Russia) Would be awesome if we could get him, but Im sure hes damn expensive.
2) Luiz Felipe Scolari (Portugal) I hate this guy and do not want him coaching the USA.

Complete Potential USA Coaches List, in order of preference:
1) Jurgen Klinsman. The granddaddy, the favorite, the best. Let’s get him if we can.
Yes, Sunil should hire this guy...
2) Peter Nowak.
Bad idea, hiring the "Flavor of The Month" in MLS.
3) Steve Nicol.
Ditto.
4) Frank Yallop. As former Canada coach, he knows CONCACAF inside and out. Currenlty works with Landy Cakes.
That he's already played and coached internationally is a plus. That he can't help Landon grow a pair is a distinct negative.
5) Bob Bradley.
No to MLS coaches that aren't good enough for metro.
6) Dave Sarachan – Second best american for the job. Currently nuturing Rolfe and Jaqua for future national team spots.
Have you read the Fire boards? Obviously not. They're wanting him GONE, and I can't blame their fans: What with a meager 22 points, they're only ahead of the injury-riddled Crew! {Please pay attention to MLS before you start firing off any MLS names.}
7) Carlos Queiroz
NO.
10) Jose Pekerman
Maybe.
11) Aime Jacquet
NO. Rode the genius of Zidane to victory.
11b) Dick Advocaat
Already has a job, I think
15) John Harkes
NO. Too many DCU jacknuts will spend hours on BS wanking off to this possibility. Besides, the last coach from DCU that coached the national team ended up a joke and a national disgrace.
19) Earnie Stewart
NO, but as an aside, maybe a good choice as an assistant/Euro-based scout.
After Euro 2008 options:
1) Guus Hiddink (Russia) – Would be awesome if we could get him, but I’m sure he’s damn expensive.
2) Luiz Felipe Scolari (Portugal) – I hate this guy and do not want him coaching the USA.
Neither will come here, and neither are in USSF's price range. Next!

nowak is long from being a flavor of the month...
he's gotten mentions long before arena was close to getting fired ...
plus, he's done well, except for the meltdown last play-offs against the FIRE...
and he's got a solid relationship with ADU, which might be good or bad, depending on what the relationship really is....

I also don't think that Nichol is a Flavor of the Month candidate. But I do think he's the wrong candidate.
A too-narrow use of players, an overly conservative approach, and a lack of team scoring was what we got from our last USMNT manager.
Good coach, bad match.

Of course, should DCU let it dribble down their leg again in the playoffs, Nowak won't look very good as a hire. [Not many DCU fans wanted him for national team coach when DCU took a beating to Sarachan's fire last year.]
I maintain that Nowak is decidedly the "flavor of the month." Should he win MLS Cup, USOC, or do the double, he will start to move away from being the "flavor of the month."
In any case, should Sunil fail to secure a top coach for the job, the national team will again be saddled with a lesser light directing it, IMO.

Shouldn't Carlos Alberto Perreira be on the list? Did I miss something on him (a new job)?
He's not my top choice, but he'd be near the top over some of the guys with zero international coaching experience IMO. Just a thought.

Parreira allegedly took the South African job but has backed out. No deal has been signed yet.
PS. Dick Advocaat is coaching the richest team in the world at this moment - Zenit St. Petersburg.

Oh yeah, thanks. We'll see if he stays there.

I'm for Klinns or Nowak. But Freddy Adu as our future star? I think maybe he's going to be just OK as an international. At best.

It makes obvious sense for the U.S. to hire Ricardo Lavolpe.

Parreira would be a wrong choice because of his style. He had an absolutely loaded Brazil squad in a defensive 4-5-1. That should be punishable by law.

Lets please not ever include Sven or Carlos Queiroz is a list of possible coaches. Both have incredibly long records of medicrocy.

Lack of team scoring? As I recall, NE has been the highest scoring team in the league the last couple of seasons before this one.

Nowak is a good coach (he's doing better, especially in learning from his blowup with Adu). But we fire Bruce Arena (remember, I'm a long time DC United fan), and we have all the big talk from USSF, everyone, about "going to the next level," blah blah blah, we hire--another coach from DC United, with less of a track record than Arena had when he was hired? Same goes for the other MLS coaches mentioned, with correspondingly less success in MLS.
Nicol is interesting mainly in that he does well coaching US players, and the Revs have been great talent spotters in the drafts (don't know how much credit Nicol deserves there.) But the next coach isn't going to spend lots of time looking for obscure youngsters--there's already a pretty deep pool. Someone like Nicol would be a good assistant and to look for players who deserve more attention. But if we end up hiring someone from MLS, then you have to question what the point was in dumping Arena.

But if we end up hiring someone from MLS, then you have to question what the point was in dumping Arena.
You could ask the same question about the majority of coaching changes using that logic. The truth is that Arena had an abnormally long run as head coach (about 8 years) in this enviornment and that a change was necessitated based on the results of Germany.
I don't think Nowak would be a step back, I just think it would be something different and a breath of fresh air to the USMNT.

I've actually heard a time or two from different sources that Dominic Kinnear is a candidate. But that could be because I've been in Houston all summer, and people here really like him... He is a pretty good coach, but US soccer needs someone to shake things up. Klinsmann will be our man, if it is at all possible.

Re-hire Steve Sampson. I hear he's available.

I wasn't too high on the idea of Yallop but after watching the LA/Houston game from last week, the idea is growing on me. If he can do to the US what he's doing to LA, only good things will happen.

Why isn't anyone jumping on the guy that said Adu would just be an OK international player? Two reasons why this is a dumb comment: 1. Adu is already a better offensive player on any given night than 90% of the guys in MLS. Granted he is still inconsistent, but he is 17 years old, for God's sake. People forget how young he is. Enjoy him now, MLS: he is going bye bye very soon. 2. You have absolutely no evidence to determine what he will be like either way. He may be bad, he may be the next great. Regardless, he has played ONE international senior level match. No one, including myself, can make any kind of comment on how he will play on the international level.
