There is apparently a Mexican-born player who lived in Vancouver as a teenager by the name of Santiago Fernandez. He played for Club America 3 years ago and has since joined Barcelona U23. He is 20 years old currently...anyone know anything about him?

He's back with Club America. He dropped from Barcelona for whatever reason and found his way back to CA. He's likely to see no action this season, a loan might be his best bet. America is overloaded at the Forward position.

Thanks for the info. Has he ever played for Mexico at the international youth level?

He had a brief run with a U20 squad last year. Seriously the last noise he made was in the CONCACAF champions league game against portmore, he scored once, but blew an clear open netter. Take it for what its worth, maybe he does not get the chances with America, or he's sub par. I presonally believe he's not that fresh, if he is ship him to America Jr (San Luis) so he gets the playing time he requires to hone his skills. Time keeps on slipping for this guy, he might be a never was in a few years.

Santiago is currently enrolled and playing with Zacatepec la filial de America in la Primera A along with the Son of Captain Tena ( a prostect midfielder in la cantera del America). I think Fernandez has the possibility of getting called up to the first team if a forward gets injured, you might see him sitting on the bench in a few games. The last time he saw international action (he was a starter) was with u-21 in Toulon France tournament a few weeks before the world cup.

Shouldn't this thread be moved to a different sub-forum? Santiago Fernandez is not a Mexican Abroad.
