Hey there all,
I don't see much soccer on free to air TV in NZ. But I love to know any exciting soccer incidents that you saw today on TV or at the actual match. Share with us the story, tell us how it went and who did it and againest who.

I just finished watching Manchester United vs. Oxford, a preseason friendly. Ole Gunnar Soljkaer scored from 20 yards on a half volley after Ronaldo chested down a Gabriel Heinze cross, into Ole's path.
Then Bardsley crossed to Saha, who stood the ball up for Ronaldo to volley from outside the box with his right foot into the corner.
Darren Fletcher scored a goal from 23 or so yards out/
Then Ronaldo curled another shot from outside the box into the corner adter David Jones put him through.

I just watch a news clip of Liverpool's Riise scoring the first goal from outside the 18 yard. He received the ball in the middle third and blasted a right foot drive from maybe 25 yards. It is debateable whether the Chelsea Goalkeeper could have a hand on the ball, but as a hard driven shot along the ground and the ball was bouncing and gathering speed from the ball's top spin. The best long drive shot for a long time. What a start for the Charity Sheild and the Premiership Season.

Yeah, it certainly did look like someone like Cudicini would normally save that. Anyone notice how John Terry spread his body wide like a star (what they teach Goalkeepers) in an attempt to block the shot, more than liikely with his hand.

I hear the Oxford goal wasn't to bad either.
Oxford's Andy Burgess scored a cracking goal from 25 yards against Halifax on Saturday.

Riise admitted in a post game interview he expected the shot to be saved - Cudicini dove over it. He was at fault. Nice run though.

He does that regularily.
IIRC he did successfully block a shot that way with his arm last season (outside the box), and wasn't even carded for it.

I haven't really been lifted out of my seat in some time.
The game is at a bit of a standstill now - it has evolved to the
point where competitive advantages have shrinked, coaches are
using similar tactics, and pure talent is being subtly neutralized by
the superb fitness of defenders and midfielders.
Having said that, Messi is imo in an absolutely different class. I know
it's preseason, but watching him in the American friendlies has been
something. I just can't remember seeing a player carry the ball at such
top speed without for a moment losing control. He's probably the best
dribbler in the world for the sheer difficulty of dispossessing him. Then
too he can pass and his finishing is really cool.
Max Bretos said of him the other night: "We'll see if the youngster can
crack Barcelona's first XI this season." God, that killed me.
American announcers - that's the other amazing thing in soccer today.

Aside from Liverpool's win and Riise's goal I thought Barca's pre-season friendly against Red Bull NY was pretty damn entertaining with some awesome offensive play by both sides, mainly Barca of course.

I saw Kuyt's shot from 10 yards inside his own half for Liverpool on the news. The keeper was sooo caught out scrambling backing and eventually on his knees. The ball bounced on the goaline and into the goal. The new reader said that it was Kuyt's second goal from inside his half for Liverpool. Is that right?

Edit: Oh sorry, I standed corrected, I mixed Kuijt and Xabi Alonso up. It was Xabi then OK. Seems an interesting player to keep an eye on if he was willing to give it a go.

There is always room for the truly special player to drop your jaw and I think with better defenders making audacious skill less common it makes the amazing things all the more beautiful.
Rooney in a short time in the limelight has scored some truly sick goals.
Last year Pedersen scored a jaw dropping goal each time he played Manchester United.
Rio Ferdinand scored a goal, period. That's pretty amazing :D
but seriously, I think there are alot of things that happen that are amazing, even if its statistically. Gerrard and Lampard's scoring tallies last year make Scholes and Pires in their heyday seem pedestrian and they played in full all out attacking teams!
and if you're really bored, just look at a few Barca matches. Ronaldinho might not be the most productive player in the world, but he sure can make you slackjawed.

The other came in a cup round against a lower division side, the keeper came up for a set piece and liverpool won possesion while he was still in the oppositions half, Alonso put the ball into the empty net from distance. Not as spectacular as the one against newcastle.

it probably doesn't qualify as 'recently', but did anyone else catch that incident from some lower-league game in Brazil last week? I've seen the footage on both Portuguese and German TV, so chances are it's been going through most of Europe.
for those who haven't seen it:
there's some shot going wide, the goalie picks up the ball from out of bounds and is preparing to take the goal kick. meanwhile, there's this dude hanging out next to the goal who's holding a ball in his hand, doing nothing in particular. now - while the goalie places the ball on the edge of the small box to take the kick, that guy, in an out-of-the-blue move, drops his ball onto the playing field, steps on the pitch and, well, scores.
what initially appeared as a schoolboy joke suddenly becomes an issue, with lots of players and the ref converging on the spot, arguing angrily. chaos ensued.
eventually, incredibly, the "goal" was given.
