I thought it was: "I hope to Given You're right"

good vibes maaan, good vibes...but then again this IS Newcastle we are talking about.

How did football365.com (http://www.football365.com/story/0,17033,8750_1401924,00.html) put it:

"2) Newcastle to present the first known sight of infinity by putting their trophy cabinet on public display...."

yep thats about right.

Last year's results vs Wigan (from here) (http://www.sportinglife.com/football/premiership/newcastle/reports/newcastle_2005.html)...

Oct 15 at JJB Wigan 1 Newcastle 0 :(
Newcastle Given, Carr, Boumsong, Taylor, Elliott (Clark 88), Bowyer (Ameobi 37), Parker, Faye (Emre 45), N'Zogbia, Shearer, Owen.

"Wigan striker Jason Roberts' third goal of the season lifted Paul Jewell's side to the dizzy heights of second in the Barclays Premiership after claiming another prize scalp."

"However, the match was overshadowed by the performance of referee Phil Dowd, who turned away two penalty appeals from Newcastle and sent off Wigan winger Lee McCulloch late on after a challenge on Emre."

"Magpies captain Alan Shearer was also denied a 'goal' when a 65th-minute header appeared to cross the line, only for one of Dowd's assistants to deny them the equaliser."

Nov 30 at JJB Wigan 1 Newcastle 0 (Carling Cup 4th Round)
Newcastle Given, Ramage, Boumsong, Elliott, N'Zogbia, Bowyer (Brittain 45), Parker, Solano, Emre (Faye 71), Shearer, Luque (Chopra 57).

"David Connolly sent Wigan into the last eight of the Carling Cup with a late penalty after manager Paul Jewell's side had battered Graeme Souness' hapless Newcastle."

"It appeared it would be one of those nights at the JJB Stadium as the Latics' mostly second-string outfit - Jewell having made nine changes - conjured chance after chance without reward."

"But, with extra-time looming, referee Steve Bennett correctly pointed to the spot when Jason Roberts was held in the area by Robbie Elliott, allowing Connolly to beat Republic of Ireland team-mate Shay Given."

April 15 at SJP Newcastle 3 Wigan 1 :p
Newcastle Given, Carr, Bramble, Moore, Elliott, Solano,Dyer (Clark 75), Bowyer (Faye 8), N'Zogbia, Shearer,Ameobi (Chopra 18).

"Newcastle's unlikely late charge for Europe gathered pace as skipper Alan Shearer grabbed a double to kill off Wigan."

Thread title reads "8/20/06" which must be incorrect since the linked schedule has the match on 8/19/06.

I must not drink heavily the night before so that I can wake up for this match.

Send Sarabella a PM, perhaps or maybe BW can alter it.

Anyway, we haven't won but one opener in the last 8 or 10 years, I think. So needless to say, we're due. Wigan are a club that, while they did stay up last year and while I think Jewell is a very good gaffer, could easily go down this year since they lost some strike force and their best defender has one foot out the door. Won't be easy, but I'm thinkin' 2-1.

Note the player who figured in the two losses and was a healthy scratch in the win.

Prediction: 3-1 to our lads with goals ... Ameobi, Solano, Ameobi

Anyone want to take a crack at the starters?

Here's a brilliant preview of the game...

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/feature?id=376135&cc=5901

An impressive season last campaign has given Paul Jewell's men real belief. In contrast, a miserable set of injuries and the retirement of the iconic Alan Shearer means there is tough work ahead for Glenn Roeder's Newcastle. Scott Parker and Emre will look to control the game from midfield and the addition of Damian Duff should bolster a threadbare attack that only boasts Shola Ameobi and the ineffective Albert Luque at the moment.

While Wigan's defence should not be troubled too much this Saturday, Jean-Alain Boumsong and Titus Bramble could be in for a torrid afternoon trying to keep a lid on the lightening fast Henri Camara and bullish Emile Heskey. Wigan have lost key players in the transfer window, but Jewell has also bought shrewdly. Chris Kirkland and Denny Landzaat should debut in a game that is too close to call.
Key Battle: Jean-Alain Boumsong vs Henri Camara. Prediction: (1-1)

Camara vs. Boumsong? Unless Camara is handling a throw-in right in front of the home bench, I don't see the 2 of them getting close together. How about doing 5 minutes of research before coughing up that expert analysis?

Jean-Alain Boumsong played in the two games we lost to Wigan, but he didn't play in the win. Thus, it can be reasonably assumed that if Boumsong doesn't play, we win. Where's Tonya Harding's hitman when you need him? :D

Well, big bad Boum hasn't played in many, if any of our matches thus far, so hopefully he won't feature on Saturday. Although Taylor didn't look the best in England's U-21 match, maybe him and Moore will be the preferred pairing in the middle on Saturday. Or maybe it'll be big Titus and Moore. I hope Titus can get things straightened out.
