In the tradition of happy, upbeat music that you might associate with sunshine and few worries, I'm starting (or repeating; I may have done this before) a thread for you people who aren't embarassed to admit that you do occasionally like a happy tune to put together your 15-20 of 'em.

Here's mine: (beware: If you're a shoegazer or a headbanger, some of these will seem wimpy to you. But different songs sound different to different people, and this ain't your kinda thread anyhow)

Every Kind Of People- Robert Palmer
You're My Best Friend- Queen
Give A Little Bit- Supertramp
Hello, Goodbye- The Beatles
Fool On The Hill- The Beatles
Chiquitita- ABBA
Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)- George Harrison
Another Day- Wings
We Can Work It Out- The Beatles
Magic- Pilot
Mercy, Mercy, Me- Marvin Gaye (yeah, I know, but it sounds upbeat musically)
Diamond Girl- Seals & Crofts
My Cherie Amour- Stevie Wonder
Come Saturday Morning- The Sandpipers
Cecilia- Simon & Garfunkel
What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)- Junior Walker
Don't Pull Your Love- Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds

Give your lists.

Thanks!

It's pretty much based on chord progressions first and lyrics second. I could have done another two of these lists easily.

"Fool" is one of those tunes that sounds happy, even tho the lyrical content isn't at all so. I can't really describe musically what makes a tune "sunny" (you'll notice I didn't include the Fifth Dimension's Let The Sunshine In, because that refers to sunshine, but isn't musically upbeat), but like porn, I know it when I see (hear) it.

Taos, I knew I could count on you to contribute. Cool. Now if grouchy Smiley321 (who hates happy tunes and sappy tunes equally) shows up, this thing'll get rolling.

BTW- yours is the first list of any kind on any thread in this forum that contains not one tune that I know. Not one. I'm truly amazed at that. I've got a new list of songs to listen to, I guess.

You are surely going to recognise some of them even if you don't know them by title. Its an old guy's list, but there's nothing obscure about "Hot 'Lanta," "Can Ya Hear Me Knockin'," "Graceland," "NSU," ("Live Cream" version BTW) "Three Little Birds," "Oh Atlanta," or "White Trash Wedding," and "Muskrat Ramble" is to Dixieland as "Jambalaya" is to country or "Johnny B Goode" to rock'n'roll; you're gonna know the melody...

Hmm-- is it too late for me to add "Postcard From a Dream" from that album? No, wait, make that "Four Leaf Clover" from Abra Moore...

17. Build Me Up Buttercup - The Foundations

This is on my #2 list, soon to be posted. Great call!

BTW, it also made AOL's 111 Wussiest Songs (a list with which I disagree in principle. I started that thread only because I recognized so many tunes on it)

I guess mine would be a two disc set. :)

Not a prob.

Good call on the Wills-- I'd never have thought of it but its perfect. Try the Subdudes version of "Big Chief," if you can stand the impurity...

This is going to be harder than I anticipated because I'm not going to use any of my favorites that have already been selected.

1. Love for Tender - Elvis Costello & the Attractions
2. Dreaming - Blondie
3. No Worries - Hepcat
4. Son de la Negra - Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan
5. Rat Race - The Specials
6. Swan Lake - Madness
7. Unyielding Conditioning - Fishbone
8. Breakaway - Tracy Ullman
9. Happy Hour - The Housemartins
10. La Vida es un Carnaval - Celia Cruz
11. Simmer Down - The Wailers
12. John James - Toots & the Maytals
13. Bring it Back Again - Stray Cats
14. Earthquake and Fire - Hepcat
15. It's All Right - Impressions
16. Gimme Little Sign - Hepcat
17. Honour Your Mother and Your Father - Desmond Dekker
18. Judge Not - The Wailers
19. Twisting the Night Away - Sam Cooke
20. Heatwave - Martha Reeves and the Vandellas

The sequence is all wrong, but I'm having a serious memory block at the moment, and I was more concerned with getting them down before I forgot them. The more I look at it, it's less a Sunny Day CD than a Summer Night CD, but that's more my style anyway.

Edit: I'm suddenly remembering all the songs I forgot. I hate making lists like these.
